Hello,
My Toshiba Satellite A205 with Windows Vista Basic has stopped working. I try to start it up, but all it gives me is the beginning TOSHIBA/Phoenix logo loading screen and for the windows loading screen it only gives me the little loading bar at the bottom. The windows logo does not show at all. After those two load up, it goes to a black screen and just completely stops loading. The hard drive stops working as in the light doesnt blip anymore and it just stays at a back-lit black screen. I can sort of hear the fan going, but it stops after a while.
I left it on over night thinking maybe it was loading something, but still after that it was just at the black screen. Hopefully nothing is wrong with the hard drive. I kinda read around and people said it's probably related to the video card? Also, the first time this happened it gave me the option to go into safemode, but instead I just held the power button down to restart it. It no longer gives me the option to start up normally or in safemode. It doesn't show the screen at all. Thanks for reading and I hope there is a solutuion to this problem. My one year warranty from Toshiba ran out, a couple days ago actually >:(, but I have a two year warranty from the store I bought the laptop from... but no reciept.

I have no idea. I haven't gone into the store that I got my warranty from because it is not near where I live. It seems either Toshiba had faulty hardware and knew about it, or something bad is going on with every single laptop of this model all at the end of their warranties. We should investigate this. If anyone has found out anything about this can you please reply back to let the rest of us know what's going on?

Same exact thing here. I have about three weeks worth of writing for AP english on it and now I'm going to lose it and not be able to take the class. Vista and toshoba are spawns of the devil and should be burnt at the stake.

For all of you guys here that replied to this, I figured out the problem is Window's fault, not Toshiba's. Something gets corrupt in the boot-up files, but all your files on your hard drive are still safe. All you guys will need to do is re-install Windows onto your system. But you need to back up your files.

Since you guys can't access your hard drive to back it up with Windows, use a program called Puppy Linux. It runs off of just a disk and leaves nothing on your hard drive! Once you get into Puppy, you can access all of your files there and back them up onto a thumb drive or other USB storage device. You can even burn a disk with puppy and access the internet. It also has other cool little applications. I know it will take a while with small sized thumb drives, but I think its still worth it if it means saving your files.

http://puppylinux.org/ is the link to Puppy Linux. Give it a try, it really works. Some people even use Puppy just because its faster and easier than Windows. Don't get the latest 4.2.1 Puppy though, because it doesn't have wifi support for the internet. Instead, get just 4.2

I hope this helps all you guys here with this problem.

When I put my recovery disk in it says "windows loading files" once its loaded the files it will come up with the normal windows loading screen however the windows logo is not there, and after a while it goes to a blank screen... :(

If you guys need help, this is how I did it:

BACK UP YOUR FILES FIRST, THIS PROCESS DELETES ALL FILES AND PARTITIONS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE!!

I first BACKED UP my files to an external hard drive using Puppy Linux (http://www.puppylinux.org/)

Booted up the computer and pressed and held down F12 (boot)
Inserted the Toshiba recovery disc (there should be a disc one and two).
Selected CD/DVD from boot menu
Went to Toshiba recovery wizard
I then went to the second option (format/delete everything off of hard drive)
Restarted the computer
Re-loaded the disc
Selected Toshiba recovery wizard
Selected the first option
The wizard began and all I had to do was wait until it told me to insert disc two and it did it's job from there.

I hope this helps all you guys.

I tried doing that same thing, but it when I insert my recovery disc it doesn't do anything. It just says windows is loading files...then to the microsoft page with no logo only loading bar, then back to the blank page.

However after a while on the blank page the mouse appears but theres nothing I can do but move it around.

if you have an answer please e-mail me @ VXCrunner5@aol.com

It seems that this problem is with the power settings... strangely. You do not need to re-install windows or anything crazy like that.

Here are the fix steps:
1. Turn off your computer
2. Disconnect every wire from it (including power)
3. Disconnect the battery from the bottom of the computer. There will be two tabs labeled 1 and 2.
4. Re-plug in the power wire. (the battery should not be in the computer)
5. Turn on the power. The screen will work. Choose start windows normally. (if you get that screen)
6. Go to Control Panel -> (Mobile PC) -> Power Options -> Under Balanced choose change plan settings
7. Choose Change advanced power settings
8. Find Processor power management and change the minimum processor state from 5% to 100% for each On battery and Plugged in.
9. Click Apply then OK
10. Shut down you computer.
11. Disconnect the power cord.
12. Re-install the battery on the bottom of the laptop, plug in the power cord, and restart the computer.

You should be good to go.

Sadly, my laptop wasn't working when it was just plugged into the AC with no battery, it was a problem with a corrupt boot-up partition. its solved now though.

Hey Vega. Hope you get this message, but I went to a couple other sites and posted this as my solution:

"Okay, good news. My laptop is working again and I am on it right now. All I had to do is delete everything off of my hard drive first.. as in a seperate operation, then restart then do the recovery wizard. For some reason I think one of the partitions was corrupt or the recovery wizard wasn't working properly because of the stuff still on my hard drive. I'm not sure why they don't give you the option to format before the recovery/reinstallation option. But this problem could possibly happen again, because I do not know what caused it.. Thanks for all your help!"
_________________________________________________________________________________

All I did was instead of going to the recovery wizard option first, I formatted my hard drive completely to erase every and all partitions, THEN went to the recovery wizard. Hope that helps! You gotta remember though formatting your hard drive will erase EVERYTHING on your hard drive INCLUDING all files and pictures and everything you have stored on it, so I suggest getting a linux and backing it all up first!!

This solution is only for people who tried the battery power thing above and it didn't work for them.

I already tried to format my laptop. In fact, my recovery cd for my previous Vista home does not work anymore after using it once. So I decided to change it to vista black edition. Now, the problem still do exist:
1. It freezes when I plug in the power chord during normal battery operation. (fan is still working and cd drive still react, open or close)
2. Difficult to boot during Battery operation after weeks of use (note that laptop does not boot at all using AC alone or without battery, the "on" light and "hard drive" light just blink. Seems like its trying to boot but power is not enough, but I can see the fan is still working and CD drive still reacts, open and close). But after several try, it boots again; then freeze again after some time (I have to force a "hard shut down" i.e. removing the battery). Its like "heating" the computer first. The most number of tries i make, the longer the time before it will freeze again.

I had defragmented the disk just last night and also do a disk clean up.

Thanks guyz for the help.

Hi
I just got a new toshiba and used it as usual this morning. however when i tried using it again later, it would just not start up. On repeated pressing of the power button, i got some colored lines and even the toshiba logo came on 2 times however after than it screen started fragmenting into colored lines again. and i needed to press the power button to shut down. Its only about a month old however i got it in canada and right now im elsewhere so cannot take it to the place where i bought it. Dont think the warrenty is valid if i take it out of the country. Any suggestions as to what I can try? I got plenty of snaps and other imp data and would be in a fix if I could not recover it.

Any help is welcome.

Thanks
Melody

My problem was very similar today. Do you have the hard disk light come up? Mine didn't and the laptop came up to blank screen, just like yours. It turns out waiting it out helped, and it even solved the problem for me:

Similar issue:

1) Laptop will not boot, stuck at TOSHIB BIOS screen, but after 10-20 minutes it goes to black screen with just a mouse pointer.
2) Can't even get into the BIOS Setting until I physically removed dvd player
3) With the DVD rom physically removed I can now get into the BIOS setting and boot into Safe Mode (looks like bad DVD player) Have had read/write issues for some time now.

My plan was to re-install the OS from an external USB DVD player I have but no luck. Found out on TOshiba's website that this won't work. Seems the laptop requires an internal DVD player to be installed in order to use the recovery discs. Can anyone confirm this for me and/or figured out how to an external DVD player? THis player works on all my other laptops, even to boot off a DVD. WOrks on HP, IBM, Asus and ACer, just not on this crappy Toshiba A205.
