Hello,
My Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook (Linux linpus) gets stuck during the boot phase. It goes through POST, but then when the blue screen with the Acer logo comes up, it gets stuck for ever (well, half an hour). I've tried restarting several times, same thing happens. During POST, I've also tried going into the setup menu and changing options. But after leaving, it still gets stuck on the same screen.
I've also tried the recover DVD. This starts up OK (after changing the boot order of course). But then it gets stuck on the screen where it says Select partition with the choice of next or exit. Exit works (but takes a while), but clicking on "next" does nothing. The "next" button gets pressed, but the screen stays the same.

Any ideas anybody?
Thanks

Hi :)

If this is still unsolved then perhaps try asking in another forum such as
http://www.linuxquestions.org
which is a specifically linux forum but deals with a huge range of different versions of linux. Also you may still be able to access Acer technical support to see if they can help.

I would recommend trying to set up a dual-boot with another version of linux. This should allow you to access all your data and might even help you fix the problem with Linspire. I think your machine doesn't have a cd drive? This link should help you download ubuntu to make a bootable usb-stick
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

Hi Tom,

I had the exact same problem. I did want you suggested above - put Ubuntu on a USB disk. Now the Acer loads and works fine. But I can't get the computer to boot on its own nor can I find where my files are stored to recover them. Could you continue your thread with this advice?

Thanks!
Nate

Hi guys,

I eventually figured out the the problem.
I did use Ubunto on a stick and later installed Ubuntu for a while, but I subsequently wanted to go back to the original system.

It turns out that there is a bug on the Acer system recovery DVD - it will only recognise clicking on "next" via an external mouse, not from the touch pad and buttons.
So, connecting a USB mouse enabled me to use the restore CD and carry out the restore process. I didn't have any data I wanted to retrivee on the machine.

Checking around the other Acer forums, I found that quite a few people have come up against this probelm. One very lengthy discussion asked for people whose recovery system had worked to post an image file. which then didn't work of course because it wasn't the disk that was the problem.

I think Acer should at least mention the problem on its web site, since the work-around is so trivial.
