Hello

You may need to boot up from a disk it probaly will be something eather in the bios or windows itself, or, your laptop might have a virus that isn't letting you log on. But no you should be able to fix it yourself it will be something small probaly like a deleted file, you won't have to go to a shop and pay money to get it fixed.

I am having this same problem ... stuck on the Windows start up screen for hours ... the lights on the computer seem to show progess of the computer working, but I am beginning to wonder. I am suspecting a virus on the computer and there am trying to get past the start up to install an antivirus software to try to find and remove the problem, if possible.

Any suggestions on how to find out if a virus is causing the computer to not be able to get by the "Windows is starting up" screen? Thanks.

I am having a similar problem.

When I boot, it gets to the Windows screen and the little bar goes back and forth and never stop. But I never get to a sign-in screen. I try booting in safe mode (with or without networking -- same problem).

I tried booting with a Norton Ghost boot disk and it booted from the disk, loaded the drivers, and then went to a blank screen and froze - nothing.

I'm completely confused.

The weird thing was that this happened last night, I turned things off, went away for a while, and then was actualy able to get in. I started to back up my latest files and it booted in the middle and now I'm back where I started - unable to get in. I don't think it's a cooling problem.

Could it be a problem with the bios? I haven't changed anything...

Help!

No, we did everything that Microsoft Live Help suggested and it didn't work. Took it in for repair and we were told it was the Hard Drive. Installing a different hard drive and we shall see. It just amazes me that so many people started having problems after loading SP3 and there were so many different solutions.
This is twice in 2 years that I have lost a hard drive. Paid $185 dollars the first time to have my files retrieved. They said it was successful but I never could open them again. Won't waste my money this time. Do you know how to retrieve them?

Hello,

You should try updating the bios.
Go to the bios menu - pc configuration - check the bios verison.

Then go to the web page of the brand and verify the bios versions. If it is a newer version try downloading the latest version for your bios option.

Good luck!

When I boot in safe mode, a bunch or driver names come up on my screen, and then it freezes at a point.
It wont boot from the XP disk... it loads the drivers and everything..and then it stops
It's weird. Somehow, I fixed it for 2 weeks, and now..it is back to the same point.

Hi, I have a Fujitsu Seimens computer and had the same problem luckily i havea 4 year warranty but Fujitsu kept saying it was a hard drive problem and changed it 3 times ! still no joy.
I played around with the cables going from the hard drive to the start button and it turned out to be one of those which according to the engineer who came to fit a new one cost about ÂŁ1.50 computer has been fine since.
It may not be the answer to your problem but might be worth looking at before buying costly hard drives. According to fujitsu they had never heard of this causing a problem before.
Hope it helps.
Martin.

I have a similar if not the same issue as Mich.

Over time my windows seems to be freezing on the loading screen more and more, and now I can't get on at all. It's even taken me several tries jsut get get onto safe mode. I don't have any software on my PC I wouldn't usually have. I've not tried booting from a CD yet. I'll try it when me PC's done doing it's thing. But this is really irritating.

I heard from someone that there's a component in PSU's that when faulty somehow doesn't provide windows with enough power to startup, hence it just freezes instead.

I'm going to put my HDD into the computer downstairs when i get the chance. It's exactly the same as this one (except i have a TV card and wireless, the other doesn't) so It should work. This should determine if it's my tower at fault or my computer. I want to avoid wiping my PC as long as possible. I've already wiped it less than 2 months ago :/

Hello,
check the jumper on the back of the cd/rom or hard drive before you discard it . It should be set to Master before you discrd it. The jumper is a tiny clip that connects pins together. It is easy to pull this off and move it over to MA- master. Cable select can go out and seen like the cd/rom or even hard drive has died, when it actually has another rout of transportation for data. Cable select can burn out kind of like a fuse burning out. Master is another way for data to travel. just open the computer and look. This will cause alot of Hard drive errors such as can't boot into the Operating system or can't get my cd to play. It can even be intermitten errors not just total failure. Every one also needs to remember to Defrag and SCANDISK-Error checking for the hard drive. this will prolong the life. I would pull out the hard drive and slave it into another computer and run a scan disc on it.

The jumper? No offence, but what decade are you living in? Modern hard drives are designed to not need jumpers.

hey mate

If you read what ive already put in, then you can understand what else to do.
This is the first step to try. Basically, as the computer boots up, press one of the F buttons (The one to run in safe mode) then login as your administrator. Change or delete your password, or change the config of your general system.
Failing this, take out all your hardware (mouse, keyboard, headphones, anything that gets plugged in externally) and the attempt to reboot. Im not sure if this step works for and Desktop, as i have only done this for laptops.
This last step is extreme but is most likely to fix any problem unless.......
Put in your XP/Vista CD and reboot with what you have (this, unfourtunalty will wipe your drive, so make sure you have backups of what you need)

Unfourtunalty, it sounds like you have "The Blue Screen of Death", the computer users worst nightmare. If none of the before mentioned worked, then it sounds like one of the internal systems (like the motherboard or the CPU) was jogged out of place, and therefore you can either go to the original hardware store where you got it from, and get it fixed, (if you got it from Ebay or something P2P) then take it to any laptop shop and see what they can do, or, if the worst comes to worst, then you may have to completely replace the unit.

Sorry if this doesnt answer your question, but my way of fixing things comes through Trial and Error :)
If it doesnt get fixed, i keep trying until it does. (I like to tinker with computers)

I recently ran into this problem of freezing on the windows loading screen on a dell notebook. It turns out in my case it was a bad cdrom drive causing it to freeze. It would boot in safe mode and read discs, but when booting with a known working drive or without a drive at all windows would load in normal mode just fine. If you have an extra cd/dvd drive to test try it and see if you can boot up. If so you may just need a new cd drive. Hope this helps.

Yea, I found that whenever I disable my "Intel(R) 82801EB PCI Bridge - 2441" from the devices menu I can load into Windows just fine but when its enabled I get stuck at the windows loading screen. This seems to control my Ethernet card, well actually all my network adapters. So yea, no internet connection on that computer unless I find a solution to that certain device problem.

Hello i fix the error by pulling out the mmc card reader and i pull all cd/dvd roms so you just have the motherboard and the hard disc connect on the pc. So i at a time i power off and put one in at a time, wen i put in the mmc card reader it would not boot up the problem with my pc was the mmc card reader. hope this helps you

Instead of looking at the software, you may need to open the devices up and look at the capacitors and/or transistors; to see if they are buldging or leaking. Give the motherboard a good look for anything that doesn't look right.

My room mate works on computers for casinos in vegas and he told me that when i updated to windows service pack 3 that i might have problems logging on to my computer. My computer just restarts itself after the Windows bar scrolls for awhile, no safe mode or last good config. start ups either. All failed, he said that he would have to install an additional component if this happened. I moved and live in colorado now and I have no idea how to get into my computer and do that. If anyone else has heard anything about this window XP bug or any other solutions please help. Paul

I'm with you. My friend's can't get past the log on screen. It won't accept his password.

IT DOES NO GOOD TO BOOT INTO SAFE MODE! It brings up the log on screen too and still won't accept his log on.

We're looking for a boot disk now but I don't know what to do after we boot off a CD in order to reset the admin log on.
