Monitor advice

roeecho, on Sunday June 22, 2008 01:49:50 PM
Hello,

I'm torn between these two monitors:
The Samsung 2253LW and the Samsung 216BW
Both are 21.6" widescreen
Specifically,
The 2253LW specs:
Brightness: 300cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 8000:1 DC
Response time: 2ms
It's also High gloss

The 216BW:
Brightness: 300cd/m2
Contrast Ratio: 3000:1
Response time 5ms
It's matte

The 216BW is also advertised as possessing "16.7 MILL Colours" the other isn't -- What is that?

I'm really kinda clueless about this whole subject. The 216BW is only slightly more expensive than the 2253LW. I want to use it for photo editing and gaming.
So... which one is "better" for my purposes?

Thanks a bunch
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

Both these displays are sold at Newegg.com and both have customer reviews. It appears the 2253 has better reviews and it does have a faster response time at 2ms. Faster response time is important for gaming. Both response times are good though. The stands on both displays don't appear to have height adjustment.

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 225bw and love it. My base is height adjustable. Once set I haven't moved it since. I think Samsung LCDs are good choices. I would go for the 2253lw.

Be aware of the dead pixel warranty that comes into play at virtually every online vendor. Buying locally from a big box store usually allows you to return a display for any reason. That is not the case with online vendors.

You need to decide if that insurance is worth any extra cost in case you get a display with a few dead pixels and it is still within what is considered by the manufacturer to be acceptable.
