Surround sound quit

Hello,
I was housesitting and the t.v.'s surround sound worked fine until the last night. The surround sound totally quit and you could barely make out the t.v.'s sound when the volume control from the box was turned up all the way. When using the remote control for volume, it did not display "volume" up or down on the t.v. as normal, nor would the volume work.(channels worked..) Since it is not my t.v. I feel especially bad about this. The homeowners do not know how to fix it..more guilt! Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
p.s.-I did turn the system off at the boxes instead of the remote that last night since the remote wouldn't shut the system down.

Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0
