Hello,
My Dell laptop will not boot-up. When I start the computer it automatically goes to the Advance options screen; stating the startup in safemode options. When I try to start up in safe mode or last known good configuration the computer displays a blue screen stating "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. UNMOUNTABLE-BOOT-VALUE. STOP 0x000000ED-(0x82EF77B8,0xC000009C,0x00000000,0x00000000). I do not know what to do. Is this a virus? and if so how do I get rid of it? What should I do to get my computer running properly again?
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

When booting up to Win XP you may get a error that reads "Unmountable Boot Volume". This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.
You can boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome to setup press the letter R
You will get a dos prompt
Then type "chkdsk /p" without the quotes and hit enter
When that is done type "fixboot" and hit enter
"Y" and enter at the prompt
Then type "exit" and hit enter
The system will now reboot into Windows
If for some reason that don't work for you, you can boot to the recovery console like above and...
Type "chkdsk /r" then enter
When done type "exit" and hit enter.
This will take longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

For the NTLDR problem, copy the NTLDR file from a working installation of Windows, and place it in the root directory (probably c:\) of the computer that is not booting. You may have to remove the disk drive and map it as a secondary drive on another computer to do this. Or perhaps if you already have dual-boot, then you can just boot to the other OS to paste the NTLDR file.

When I turn my computer it seems like it might be OK. It gets to the windows start up and the following message appears: Stopc0000139 entry point not found the procedure entry point gd:GetBitmapBitsSize could not be located in the DLL GDI32.dll. It will not start in the safe mode or let me restore from last good starting point. This is a dell computer with the programs loaded when I bought it. Can I make a start-up CD from another computer? I have tried everything I know to try, PLEASE HELP!
