Upload pics from cell to laptop

Hello,
How do I upload pictures from my motorola cell to my laptop?
I put in the cable and it tells me it found new hardware, End of Story.
...am I supposed to do something after that?

If your phone comes with a CD then run the CD, it dhould install a software and after that, re connect your phone to your computer and you should be able to transfer images and songs to and from your phone...

So what do you do if your phone does not come with a CD? I can download songs to the phone via a usb cable, but I can't upload pictures.
