Lost start menu and shortcut icons

Hello,
i got a program from a cable company that came with the internet modem
Ever since i installed the cd rom progam i cant get my start menu and desktop short cut icons back. the only way i can access any programs i have to go threw my task menu by pressing alt + control + delete at the same time. How do i fix this problem for free?

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 6.0

Hi,

go to the task manager (alt+ctrl+del) and then select new task under the applications tab.

then type explorer and hit enter.

ths should solve the problem.
