No sound (Most of the time)

Hello,
My computer is a desktop that has Vista. A few weeks ago, my brother installed a bunch of updates. That night, the sound stopped working. However, after testing everything, we found out that some sounds work. Computer games, itunes, realplayer/media players, and speakers tests work. What DOESN'T work are start up sounds, anything in browsers (youtube vids etc), Rosetta Stones, Power Tab, anything apparently MIDI related. We tried doing many things, but nothing works.

But just now, I tried loading another computer game and it said that it could not find a sound card file. It said it would load and run fine, but with no audio.

Is there anything I can do?

Thanks!
