External Hard Drive I/O Error

Hello,

I couldn't find any posts with similar problems as mine so here goes.
Bought a new Vox 750GB external HD. Powered on drive and plugged in usb 2.0 cable. Windows said the drive installed correctly and was ready for use. Now I tried to format it.

It showed up in My Computer but when I double click on it it says "the drive is not accessible" and "the request cannot be performed because of an I/O Error."

when I right click on the drive it takes 2 minutes before the menu pulls up but when I click on anything nothing happens.

I tried going to disk management but the drive doesn't show up. I also looked under device manager and the drive is there. I tried disconnecting the drive and turning it off a few times and nothing is working. I also tried using different usb ports as well.

I'm not sure what is going on and why I can't format the darn thing. Any thoughts?

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

It must show up in disk management before you can continue. Be sure to pull down the area in case the view is below the other drives. If it isn't there then return the box.

Only last idea would be to view it with a knoppix cd or other linux live cd. Or try on another system.

My guess would be the connector to the disk is loose or fallen off or some other damage. In any case you have to return it to protect warranty.

Registry Error, Check error code in device manager. type it in the troubleshooter. It will tell you to Remove 2 lines from registry. Works fine
