Error Deleting File or Folder

12candyman, on Thursday 19 June 2008 à 12:27:22
Hello,

I have a mysterious folder on my desktop that I want to delete but I keep getting, "Error Deleting File or Folder. Cannot remove folder: The directory is not empty." Inside the folder is another folder, and inside that one is another folder, and so on, all empty except for another folder. This goes on about 8 times until I get to what appears to be another folder called Setup, which I can't open, and when I right click it I only have the option to Open, Explore, Search, or Send To. There is no Properties or delete option. When I highlight it and press delete on my keyboard nothing happens, not even an error. I have tried Killbox and Unlocker but they don't seem to work. Any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

1. Click Start > Run, type CMD and press Enter. From the prompt type CD %userprofile%\Desktop and press Enter, now type del name (where name is the file to be removed, e.g. abc.def) and press Enter. This should remove the file. If it does not, then keep the command prompt open and

2. Hit Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. On the Processes Tab, select the explorer.exe process and end it to halt the desktop. Switch to the command prompt window and retry the del command. Now go to the Application Tab of Task Manager and pick 'New Task'. Enter explorer.exe and click 'OK' to restart the desktop.

This was completely accurate! Thanks for the attention u gave to the question, as it worked for me even now =)
only one point for those who are still going to try it: the command prompt was always telling me the file was not found and so it couldnt delete it, but when i restarted explorer.exe it wasnt there anymore, so just do what he said and im sure it will work.

Tks again!

i think you've missunderstood.

"explorer" doesnt mean Internet explorer, it means windows explorer, its a very important behind the scenes process thats handles file browsing (and other things). You cannot be running windows without it, and using firefox makes no difference at all: its an unrelated program.

Easiest thing to do is download a program named Unlocker. Its good for those annoying folders that wont delete or ones that are being locked by another process.

I have the same issue...I'm pretty sure it some sort of virus, but Norton, AVG, and Avast haven't caught it. How did you solve the problem? Thanks!

I tried everything from above and nothing worked. I get an error headlined: Error Deleting File or Folder the inside the window it says: Cannot find the specified file. Make sure you specify the correct path and file name.

Very frustrating.
