Hye this happens when you failed to burn a DVD or CD! Most LG DVD writers have this kind of problem! You can try updating the firmware but this doesn't guarantee to work!

To update your firmware check:

http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet 2598 updating your cd dvd burner driver
http://en.kioskea.net/faq/sujet 2601 firmware cd dvd reader or burner

We have the same problem...LG should do something about their product, I thought they are one of those company that has high standards for Quality and durability... but now...I'm having doubts on the products they are putting on the market.

I experienced the same problem. I rebuild my system and in the process the LF software automatically update the firmware. Now it do not read any DVD-R's but it reads CD-r's.

Can I revert back to the original firmware?

I just had same problem, could not read dvd only cd, not even game i just bought.

Have tried everything i could find in mant forums to no avail.

Did a clean install of OS, and it is working properly again. I did this coz it worked in my brother's pc. So i figured it wasnt a problem with the hardware but with some software or OS.

I know its a pain, but if it works...

This was during this painfull operation that the writer stops to read the dvd's. It is not firmware because it works on the same machine under Mandriva. It must be a XP driver problem somewhere.

Problem still exist. I am in the process of rebuilding the machine again. It forgot over the weekend what type of discs are installed. Just shows unknown. Will see after that.
