Bad Memory - Second Opinion

gilly7979, on Wednesday June 18, 2008 02:19:04 PM
Hello,

A guy recently gave me his old P3-650mhz system. I currently have a P2-400mhz system. To fix up the P3-650 I have to remove a few things from my old system to this one.
When I first got the P3-650, I did a memory test from the program available here: http://www.memtest86.com/

It showed memory errors on the P3. I ran the same test on P2, no problems. I switched memory from my P2 to my P3 but then the memory errors still displayed on P3.

I'm assuming its not the chips. But the slots the memory goes in on the P3 or even the motherboard.

I'm still currently using my P2, but was wondering if I should switch over to P3. I would prefer the extra power but i'm afraid the P3 might be unstable to use.

I have to switch hard drives to. My P2 currently has a 40GB drive while the P3 has only a 2GB drive - no operating yet setup on the P3.

Do you think I'm risking it by switching over completely. Or am I better of just keeping my P2-400 Compaq.

Just looking for a second opinion.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hai

check the voltage. in my experience the motherboards from the pentium 2 era slot type cpus only work on 2.05 volt cpus. some of the p3 slot cpus use 1.65/1.75 volts and wont work. The p3 slot cpus usually have the voltage printed along the top blAack plastic edge along with speed/ fasb/ cache, whereas the p2 cpus do not show the voltage (but are usually 2.05 volts).

I have upgraded loads of p2 pcs to p3 but you need to check you use 100mhz fsb / 2.05 volts in virtually all cases
