Hey everyone,

For some reason my Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop froze a couple days ago and when I tried to restart it it went to the black Microsoft Windows XP black screen where it has the Windows XP logo and it looks like it's about to load, then it flashes a very quick blue screen at me, then it goes to a page where it has the Dell logo and attempts to load, but then it goes to a screen that says windows did not start successfully and offers me the options to start windows regularly, or in safe mode, etc. No matter what option I choose (start windows normally, safe mode, etc) it just goes back to the black windows XP screen and starts the process all over again (windows screen, fast blue screen, dell screen, windows didn't start successfully screen, repeat).

I once got to a screen in that process that said "Unmountable Boot Volume" (can't remember how I got there though). So I popped in my windows xp CD, and got to the recovery console and tried a chkdsk /r and fixboot commands but that did not do anything (it kept freezing after many many hours). So then I bought a laptop to ide hard drive adapter so I could connect my laptop hard drive to my desktop computer and run another chkdsk /r on there. (I unplugged the CD-rom cable and power supply and attached it to my laptop hard drive with the ide adapter...i basically tried to follow this video...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hTbFDHnKZ8g). For some reason my desktop never recognized my laptop hard drive and even when I went to "My Computer" I only saw my desktop hard drive listed. So then I put my laptop HDD back into my laptop and no I get a message that says "this is not a bootable disk" or something like that. After a few restarts I am back to the process of windows screen, fast blue screen, dell screen, windows didn't start successfully screen, repeat instead of the this is not a bootable disk. Even when I put the Windows XP disk in the CD Rom it doesn't give me the option to boot from CD now either so I can't get to the recovery console.

Sorry this is long but I wanted to provide every detail I can. Thank you so much for any help you can provide. I would really appreciate any help! Also, I'm not very techy when it comes to this stuff so please explain things like you would to a dummy. Thank you!

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 3.0.11

Well, unless I don't have the laptop in front of me I won't be able to tell you which key to press to enter SETUP (BIOS). It is either one of the following keys: F1/ F2/ or DELETE.
You must set the first BOOT Device to CDROM/DVD-RW and then press F10 to save changes and exit.
Do not use the recovery Disc. Use an original Windows Setup Disc only to format the hard disc completely. When finished, shut down the laptop and power on and then you insert the Recovery Disc.
After completion your laptop will be back to working state.
If this does not work the hard disk is faulty and you will have to replace it. Say Thanks to your favorite DJ...

Hey DJ,

Thanks a lot for your help. I did what you said (and I did have the Windows CD (not just the recovery) so I used that) and it appears as though nothing happened after I changed the boot order to boot CD rom first. After I saved the setting. I restarted and nothing happened.

Hmmm, well, disconnect the hard disk and remove it from the laptop.
Then power on the system and insert the windows setup disc and see if it loads. It should load if you have set it to boot from CD/DVD Drive first.
If this works then for sure, you have got to replace the hard drive. Say Thanks to your favorite DJ...
