Hello,

The router works well with the cable attached but when I go to wireless
I get a strong signal but unable to get on the internet with WEP security.
With security disabled the wireless works fine. But will not connect to the
internet with WEP security on. I tried to use the CD install disk that comes
with the router but ir does not help.
Any help would be apreciated

Hi,
i am a LINKSYS TECH. SUPPORT ENGG. from India so you are sooooooo close to the solution of your problem.
Just go to www.linksys.com/kb select the model no.of your router and you will get step by step help to setup your router. you can also call linksys tech. support and i am here to solve your problem.
if this is a new router then connect it to your system through ethernet cable and go to internet explorer and type 192.168.1.1 at the add. bar it will prompt for the password. leave the user blank and type admin in the password linksys setup page should open. now click on the WIRELESS TAB and on the basic wireless settings change the defale SSID NAME to your girlfriend's name and also click on reset security and click on save settings. reload the page and now go to wireless security tab and select WEP in the security tab. now type 10character password in the KEY 1 field directly and click on SAVE SETTINGS and that's it. Now when you connect to your network you will have to enter your 10 char password in your DELL LAPTOP and it should work fine now. call tech support or go to the above link for further assistance

Shashank ... I have a little different problem than was posed before. I have a Y510 Lenovo laptop and a Lexmark Z1420 wireless printer. Both were talking to my WRT54G Linksys router perfectly until I tried to turn on the security. When I was done, the laptop could no longer talk to the router wirelessly (so no internet connection) and it couldn't communicate with the printer. I have tried to undo everything but have not been successful. Is there any way that I can reset everything so I can get back to square one and start all over again?

Greetings,
so you have a lenovo laptop, linksys wrt54g wireless router and a lexmark wireless printer. And you wants to secure your wireless network. Just follow the instructions ---

SETTING UP WIRELESS SECURITY ON YOUR ROUTER--------
1> connect your lenovo with the WRT54G at port no. 1 it is very imp. to hardwire your computer, also check for the light status of the router to ensure that it is connected.
2> access the router setup from a web browser (may be using 192.168.1.1, the default address of your router, and admin as the password.). You can also go to kb.linksys.com if you need more help to access your router setup.
3> at the top click on wireless on the BLACK bar at the top.
4> under wireless click on wireless security on the blue bar.
5> select the security mode as WPA-PERSONAL (best encryption and supported by all devices).
6> select WPA ALGORITHUM as TKIP.
7> in WPA Shared Key type: "superman" or any thing else but it should be at least 8 characters long. and you should remember it as this will be your wireless password.
8> the Group Renewal key should be 3600.
9> Click on save settings at the bottom.

PERSONALIZING YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK NAME--------
1> Under Wireless, click on Basic wireless settings.
2> MODE: mixed
3> NAME: <WHAT EVER U WANT> CHANGE IT eg NINJA, SPIDER etc
4> Channel: 11
5> SSID BROADCAST: ENABLED

NOW YOUR ROUTER IS CONFIGURED.

Now u jest need to connect your laptop and printer to this new secured wireless network using the security key and i am damn sure it will work.

enjoy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shashank,

Thanks for your contribution. My old Linksys router WRT54GS works fine with my Dell laptop before . I bought a new hp lap top with Vista a month ago. The HP laptop with its customized wireless connection system automatically connect the computer to the exsiting home wireless net work. But since then, my dell laptop can connect via hard wire through the router, but no wireless net work anymore. You can see the home wireless network profile is avaiable to choose from the screen. My computer indicates that I have an excellent signal from the router, but when I try to open a browser the screen says it cannot be connected to the internet. I was wondering there is an issue with IP address , but not expert to tell. Can you help? Thanks in advance

Hi...having a problem with linksys WRT54GS wireless router and hoping you can help...

Running XP SP3 and ie8...

The router has always worked fine for me and still does but recently I've been losing my internet connection about every hour or so and have to unplug the power cord on the router to have it reset and then I get the internet connection back
If I bypass the router and go directly to my NIC from the modem I have no such problem so the problem is definitely related to the wireless setup....

Any ideas?

(using WPA Personal and TKIP)

Thanks...

Hello,

I seem to have the exact same problem as pj : I cannot get into the router's web setup menu at 192.168.1.1 (but I can ping that address), and the wireless is always on and unsecured.

I have managed to get a web page after doing the router reset procedure, before the wireless mode starts, but all I got was a page to install firmware.

I reinstalled the firmware using that page, and it looked like it reinstalled ok, but still no change to the router: no access to the setup menu, and wireless comes on and stays on unsecured.

The router is a WRT54GS V7 with SpeedBooster, serial CGNB1GC09846

The routing function works ok, I can use two pc's and a modem on the Ethernet ports, but I want to be able to turn off the wireless, or at least secure it.

Help please!

Hi,
it seems ur not able to enter in the setup page by 192.168.1.1 , and u say that u have 2 pcs and modem connected to ethernet. correct.

So just try this out, connected modem to internet port and pcs to port 1,2 and try to open the setup of router by 192.168.1.1 . if still not going through , reset the router bu pressing the reset button for 30 sec that is located at the back of linksys router . then try to open the page through ur internet Explore using 192.168.1.1 , username : (blank ) Password : admin.

Then to secure the Wireless . go to wireless tab then u can change the SSID Name to anything of ur choise and save it. then got to wireless security tab bleow black strip on blue strip. and select security mode as WEP and rest of the settings as it is then enter 10digit numeric password in Key 1 box. then save it...
Then go to wireless laptop... search for wireless signals u will find the name that u have give.. try to connect it will ask u for 10 dig same password . enter the password and click connect .....
u will get connected fine........ Best Luck try this out..

Hi, Shashank

I have a WRV200 router that i am very happy with. It is connected via a DSL modem to my desktop and I have a wireless network setup for my laptop. Now, I just purchased a Canon wireless printer and I was trying to set it up on the network and ran into a pronlem: I need WEP key for the printer to be allowed to my network access point. Well, I would need to get in my web-page at 192.168.1.1. However, when i type in that address, the info shown is that of my DSL modem. How can I reconnect the DSL modem, router and the desktop so that i could get to Lynksys website? Right no i have DSL coming into the modem, which is connected to the router via ethernet cable. The desktop is connected to the 1st port in the router.
Any help is appreciated.

Thank you

I have setup and installed many wrt54g with the antennas on them and the newer dark blue routers with the internal antennas. We now can only purchase the black Linksys routers with the Cisco logo on them, WRT54G2. When setting up the wireless, I enter a SSID and set it to broadcast. Under security, I select the WEP and enter the key. When I search for wireless networks on my laptop, I detect the SSID and click connect. My laptops start to connect. The problem is that I don't get a "enter WEP" screen, I get a screen that says to enter my PIN and then push a button on the Access Point. It gives me the option to enter information manually but that gives me a login, password and domain screen. I have tried this with Windows Vista and a Windows XP laptop. Even when I got one to work, it worked for one laptop but when someone else tried to connect their laptop, it gave them the same "push button on access point" screen. These screens are on the laptop, not in the Linksys setup in IE. Can you help on why I can't get to the "enter WEP" screen?

Hey shashank, i was wondering if you could help me. I have the linksys USB wireless adapter hooked into my desktop and i get to the part where it asks me for the key id or the passphrase. I have tried the passphrase but it says invalid (which I don't know why); I have tried the key id and after a while, it says it connects but it's limited. Not sure what I'm doing wrong.

The last router I set up was 192.168.1.0 You can reset the routers IP address By holding in the reset button on the back of the router for up to 45 seconds, but this will only reset it to default, which will be something like 192.168.1.1 or 196.168.16.1, or 192.168.1.0, you really need the manual that come with the router beacause not all of them set up the same, similar but not the same, It will ask for a login name "admin" and password which is blank. Just hit enter, but I have set up a router where this was backwards. The login name was blank and the password was "admin" . Good luck

The Linksys WRT54GS address is 192.168.1.1 and the problem may be that you are using a pass phrase to set up the WEP. As far as I know, Dell doesn't support the use of pass phrases. Try making up your own key using 26 charecters. Use any number and the letters a,b,c,d,e,and f.

Hi,
at the back of the Linksys Router you will find a reset button press and hold it for about 30 sec. (Make sure you are holding the button properly.),
it will reset all the settings of the router.
after that reboot the router, connect your computer with port no. 1 , and then try to open 192.168.1.1 from the Internet explorer of your computer.
it will give you a message "The server at 192.168.1.1, WRT54GS require a USER NAME and Password. "
Now type "admin" in the password and it will take you to the LINKSYS ROUTER SETUP.

Hi,

I don't know the model and version of your router, you can find them at the back of it.

1.Go to http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support
2.type the model no.
3.click on get downloads
4.select the version and then below, you will found firmware, under that click on download and save the bin file to the desktop.
5.now connect this computer directly to the port no.1 of the linksys router.(Very important, donot try this wirelessly )
6.open 192.168.1.1
7.Give the path of the downloaded file from the desktop and click on apply.
8.Now you can follow my previous steps.

Good Luck.

Hi Shashank,
Grateful for any insights. I'm having similar troubles connecting a WRT54G to a Dell Vista PC. The wired connections work but the wireless link does not show up on my T43 XP laptop. The Vista PC has been updated with Microsoft Update, the Wrt54g is V8 and I updated its firmware to 8.00.5. I tried setting WEP security. Very curious!

I too had the same problem, wireless connectivity was great but no internet connection via wireless, and I solved it. I had to turn off the Cable Modem for 30 seconds. I then unplugged and plugged the Linksys back in (may or may not be necessary) and then plugged the cable modem in. I turned on my laptop and I was able to connect to the internet via the wireless.

This solution assumes everything else in your configuration is correct such as security et al. Despite all of the other suggestions out there, which I had tried, this is what worked for me.

Hello all. Kind of having the same problems. I have a WRT54G. I'm trying to set up my Tivo wireless and use my laptop. Tivo has to be WEP encryption to work. When I set up WEP in 198.168.1.1 suddenly I cannot connect the laptop. It finds the SSID but it says limited to no connectivity and I have no internet. I read on here that DELL does not accept pass phrases. Could this be part of my issue? Also when I try to access 198.168.1.1 if my firewall is active it won't load right. If I shut it down it loads fine. I'm using Zonealarm. Can anyone tell me how to change settings in Zonealarm so I can keep it up when I'm using the web based interface? Thanks

I never did get the laptop to work on WEP encrytion. Had to go to a different network adapter for the Tivo that excepts different encrytion. As for typing in Admin I was having a problem with this too. I shut down my virus protection and then it worked fine. Anyone have Zone alarm that knows how to set it up so you can go into the router without shutting down Zone Alarm?

Moved our office furniture and had to take everything down. Now I've set up the network again, and have two computers plus mine (the server) working properly. However, the oldest computer - a Dell 4600 - is giving me problems. I keep getting a message that says, "Wireless Radion is Off" and that I have to turn it back on. However, the computer is not a laptop, it's a desktop, and there is no way for me to turn anything on or off. I believe it is an adapter problem and moved the adapter to a different port - but that didn't work. Does anyone know how I can fix this? The computer runs Windows XP Professional SP3. The adapter is a Zoom?

Yes u can connect to other computers using ur wrt router. for this connect the computer wirelessly and then use the windows file sharing or remote desktop features to access files wirelessly.
no u can't connect to other wireless ap using ur wrt router wirelessly, instead u can connect ur other ap to the linksys wrt router wirelessly and share internet or local files among the computers.

The issue i am having is that my laptop will connect wirelessly to my router, but yet my desktop will not connect through the hardwire ports. If i hook my dsl modem to the router, the leptop will get on the internet but the desktop will not. If i hook the desktop directly to the dsl modem i connect no problem. If i hook the laptop to the router (hardwire not wireless) it also will connect to the internet without a problem. I can access the router through the ip address when connected wirelessly but when i hook up the router to the desktop it shows "network cable unplugged". when the desktop is hooked up hardwired (to any of the 4 ports) there is no "ethernet" light on the front but yet when i tried hooking the laptop up via hardwire, it would show an "ethernet" light on to which ever port on the back i hooked up to.

if i had to guess, i would say it is something wrong in a setting on the desktop. But I have no idea where to start looking. It worked fine until we had a storm on night and there may have been a power surge that reset some default settings.

Any ideas?

Just some experience I had with this router that might help someone else -

My first wired connection set up worked great and all the wireless devices in the house connected fast. Problems started later...my wireless or wired Vista 64 bit computer connection became flaky. Most of the times it would just not work or not get an IP address from the router. Very frustrating. I spent time with Linksys support staff and nothing worked. What this did help with was understanding my new Linksys router a little better. Initially I also thought the problem might be with Comcast. There were a lot of postings talking about them registering MACs and not letting more than one MAC register to. Finally I concluded that this was not the case.

I think there may be specific issues with Vista 64 bit (mabye 32 also??) OR something that may have been causing this problem. Finally, I assigned a static IP address 192.168.1.110 (a few numbers offset from where the router starts assigning IPs which is 192.168.1.100) to my Vista wireless card and this helped fix the problem. But it took me a whole day to get this working. My XP computers worked just fine and I didn't have to assign static IPs for them.

Yes, for me it definitely was a Vista problem. My wireless was dropping constantly and although i could see the network and the signal was good, it had trouble connecting. I found the solution here: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B928233&x=12&y=11
It works perfectly now!

Hello.
I am having a problem with my router. I keep getting the "limited or no connection" error. I have tried installing new firmware, disabling firewall, reseting the router. It won't connect on that one computer, but it connects to my iPod and other computers in the house. I'm not really sure what to do...I'm stumped. Any help would be grateful!

Thanks..
--Taylor.
