Modem is connected but not the internet?

Hello,

I am sharing a wireless modem connection with my neighbour (long story - he has the modem and has loaned the secured access key to me) and he only just gave me the access key today. I initially had issues with connecting the modem (ie was recieving "Limited or no connectivity" messages even though I had a strong signal) until I figured out how to connect it [ie by changing the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) settings; User Configured to IP address:192.168.0.2; Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0].

However, this has not solved the problem of connecting me to the internet! When I attempt to use ie7 to browse, I still get the error "Internet Explorer cannot display web page" even though the moden is definitely connected (55 packets sent, 0 recieved so far). Here are some things that I have done so far:

- In ie7, I made sure that under "Internet Options" , the "Never dial a connection" radio button is selected.
- In ie7, I have also ensured that under LAN settings, the "Automatically detect settings" tickbox is the only box ticked.
- In the Command Prompt, I ran a "ping" (ie ping 4.2.2.2) and the stats show no lost packets with an average round trip of 553milli-seconds. I guess this means that I do have a connection to a network (right?)
- In the Command Prompt, I also ran "ipconfig" which confirmed that my "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection" = Autoconfiguration IP address:192.168.0.2; Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

Still no internet and I am outta ideas!!!

Can anyone suggest what I need to do to make my internet connection work??

Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7.0

I have the same issue but possibly with an even stranger twist. I have a wireless HP desktop which finds the network and gets into the internet fine. My laptop finds the network ("signal- very strong") but when I go to my browser, cannot get into the internet. All pages fail.

Then I take the same laptop to my office, and I am able to access the net there through that wirelss network with no problem at all.

So its not the router, or the HP desktop would not work. It can't be the laptop, or my net connection at work would not work. I am afraid to change any settings on the laptop, for fear that the it won't work at the office either. Please advise if possible.

my work laptop works fine at the office, but wont pick up the net at home despite two other laptops picking it up fine, its driving me insane!

would really appreciate it!

Sounds like a corrupted wireless profile, delete it and resetup the connection and it should work fine

Find someone connected to network

start ,run , cmd then type, ipconfig ,on thier computer

go to network connections on your computer
choose the connetion your trying to make
right click, choose properties

choose tcp/ip for XP or 1pv4 for vista

choosee properties

choose, use this ip address

type in same info, but change last number

example

If 192.168.0.142

you type

192.168. 0. 143

or 144 or 154 or 152

Hi All

well i finally figured out the problem, turned out there was nothing wrong with the modem, or the router, or the IP address, i just had the password wrong!

my landlord didnt realise that his password had been changed a while back and thats what was causing the problem, even though the failed connection kept saying it was the IP address thing.

someone has put a post on here about changing the last digit of the IP address, so I asked my landlord to look up his IP address with his provider and thats how we realised the problem.

maybe some of you guys have the wrong password too?

Dear Silk...

Try this..

First connect your nertwork by 'connecting network'
then go to your CMD window
Type following in 3 steps, after every step use ENTER bUtton.
1. type IPCONFIG/ALL (then ENTER)
2. type IPCONFIG/FLUSHDNS (then ENTER)
3. type EXIT (then ENTER)
Please let me know if this work, then u can create a batch file rather than typing every time.
Thanks..

Hey,
recently our internet stopped working so we bought a new modem, this didn't help so we called our ISP and they fixed it. Then our new modem stopped working so we reverted back to the old one. NOW we can only have one connection to the internet at a time using our old wired router. we plug in 2 with LAN cables and only the first one will work! and even when that one DOES work the internet is extremely slow! Please offer a solution as this is REALLY annoying!

Check and see if you have an IP Address confliction within the network. In other words 2 computers with the same IP addresses. If you do, just change the last number of the string.

Here's how:

Go to Settings (where the Start is at bottom left) and select Network Connections.
Find Wireless Network Connection. Right mouse click on it and go to Properties.
Highlight on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties.
At IP address: , change the last digit of the IP address. Chose a higher number. Chances are the lower numbers are all taken. Click Ok and exit out of all the settings.

Now try to open your internet browser again.

Hope that helps.

Hi ntt,

Thanks a million for your life-saver post on how to change the IP address to a higher number. Before that, I just couldn't figure out why FireFox keeps telling me that it can't connect to the server when I was obviously connected to the internet, as indicated by the Wireless Network Connection icon in the system tray.

I discovered that under Internet Protocol Properties, the Use the following IP address option was selected. I don't even remember ever configuring that :p. Anyway, I've changed the selection to Obtain an IP address automatically. Now everything is a-o-kay and I am back surfing the internet (^__^)

For anyone who's experiencing the same problem, of being connected but unable to load any webpage on the browser, should really give this solution a try.

Thanks ntt, your post saved my day!

When I checked the IP address where you said on the laptop the internet protocol had no IP addresses but the 'obtain DNS server address automatically' checked. Forgot to mentioned that at the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties, the Default Gateway must be the same of the router that it is used. If you're not sure, ask your neighbor to look it up in his/her computer and see what is that number and set it to the same number.

To answer your question, have your neighbor do the following,
(Don't type the quotes just the command inside)
Click on start, then run
Type 'cmd'
hit enter

type ipconfig/all
hit enter

You need to have a different IP address than he has, so if his is 192.168.1.11, pick the last number and add 100 to it to be safe, so yours would be 192.168.1.111 (just an example)

Your netmask will be the same as his, 255.255.255.0
your gateway will be the same as his

You also need to have the DNS servers that are listed, there should be 2 of them, write both of them down.

So, on your sheet of paper, you will have a unique IP address, the same netmask and gateway, and 2 dns servers.

Go to your PC, start, control panel, network connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection, then select properties, On the general tab screen, Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click properties,

Then enter your unique IP address, netmask, gateway, and both dns servers. Click ok, then ok again.

Then on your notebook/pc, click on start, run, type cmd, hit enter
type 'ipconfig/all'
hit enter, your info should match your neighbors except for the IP address
type 'ipconfig/flushdns'
hit enter
type 'exit'

now try to get online with internet explorer, you should be successful, if your not, post back on here with your results and I'll get back to you.

You know what it is? It's Skype. I had the EXACT same issue. (Cannot load browser windows, when clearly online) I used "System Restore", and chose a point before I had installed Skype, and I didn't have any issues. Originally, I had thought it was a Windows Update or something that did it.

I then downloaded Skype a few days later, and BAM. Problem returned. I did "System Restore" one more time, and haven't had any troubles since. I don't know how to fix the problem, but at least you now know what is causing it.

Hello TJ,

Sorry for the trouble, but you are the only person that seem to know about the confusion over the dsl->wifi router->pc problems out of the whole bunch of forums I have gone through during the past 3 days.

I carefully looked at the suggestions you were posted, but could not exactly match them to my situation that I am hoping you would be able to help me resolve.

So, my problem is, when I am connecting my laptop tp the ADSL modem (speedtouch smth, I believe), I have no prob accessing the internet. Although, when I try using the internet through the Lynksys WRT300N V1.1 router, I cannot open any web page neither in IE, nor in FF. My skype is connected though, no problem calling, talking, messaging...

This problem drives me nuts, as I disabled all the security features in the router, except for mac filtering, tried mac cloning and whole bunch of other suggestions I found on the WWW.

I saw somebody else having similar problems in the forum, but did not see your response with a solution to this particular problem and figured you might have sent it via e-mail.

I will greatly appreciate your help on this TJ, and will be looking forward to your reply.

TJ,
This is my first post oremail in this site. I am happy to tell you that my wifi internet connectivity problem is solved by following your instructions. i had probem for last 6 months on my new Aspire 5920G vista!!!
I went thru many site, technical experts on respective make of my PC, MODEM and serive provider.
Today it get connected and thank you so much and respect ur knowledge on networking.
Since I get just connected now, i have to watch for sometimes and probably come back to you for a 100% clear connectivity.Even though internet get connected, I could see 2 problem. Every time I have to manually type IP address on IP/TCP-4 setting, Automatic detecting is not working. At command prompt, when I type ipconfig/flushdns, it shows 'The required operation requires elevation' (even though internet get connected).

Let me ork couple of days and check how it works.
Thanks in advance

Hi TJ

I am not piggy backing service off anyone, but have same issue as the others. Can connect hard line, but not wireless.

I did everything you suggested - no luck.

I have Comcast service - Netgear - Averatec computer

Changed the IP address and when I perfomed the ping command, the address did change, but still no go.

I have been fighting with this issue for 7 months off and on (b4 I go crazy), so any other suggestions? The obvious thing I think I am missing is the DNS servers.Where do they come from?

Thanks!!

Andi,

A bunch of quick questions to help us narrow down the problem,

What type of wireless router are you using?

Does it work when your laptop is plugged in with a network cable?

Also, does it work when you "automatically configure" the IP Addresses and DNS Servers...(I assume not, because if it did, you wouldn't have posted here, but just to be safe).

When did this last work for you?

Have any updates been installed recently? If so list them.

Are you 100% certain that your Wireless adapter is installed correctly? (You do see it as an available option in network connections and such?)

Are you able to connect to others networks? (Meaning does this just happen at home, and not at work/the library...)

Sorry for the questions, it will help tremendously though.....

Hi TJ,

I have a similar issue - we have 1 desktop and 1 laptop computer, the desktop is wired directly into the modem and the laptop connects wirelessly. The laptop connection is working fine, but the desktop is saying the modem is connected but is not allowing internet pages to be viewed and programs with internet connections to work. I have had 2 updates on my computer this week, and when I tried to restore (as Andi had done) it tells me that my computer has not had any updates, so I am a bit stuck.

Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Jules,

How do you have both your PC and Laptop connected to the modem? You do have a router connected...right? Or is your modem doing both for you. (If you can grab what make/model your modem is that will help). Are you using windows XP, if so, and this did work before the two updates that you had. Launch system restore, (Click, start, then help and support), Pick a date from last week, or even the week before, just a date that is bold, and when clicked on, states "System Checkpoint" on the side. If that still does not work, I've got other ideas, but let's start there.

TJ,

I have a similar problem to the ones described in this thread. Here is the timeline and symptoms:

I use a cable modem and a Belkin wireless router to connect one desktop and three laptops (at various times) to the internet.

Mon night - All is well; main computer (ethernet-connected Dell Desktop) and Toshiba laptop (wirelessly-connected) both access internet.

Tuesday - Desktop is fine; Laptop will connect to wireless network, but not to the internet.

Wednesday - tried cycling power on modem & router; called cable company, Belkin, and Toshiba; walked through many troubleshooting scenarios; unplugged and replugged modem & router at least 5 times; powered computer off and on many times; hard reset of Belkin router; after 3 hours, determined that laptop would connect to internet with ethernet; after troubleshooting with Toshiba in SAFE MODE and restarting, laptop connected to internet!! Wonderful. However, email would receive but not send. Will work on that in the morning....

Thursday - Laptop will not connect to internet again! Ugh!

Judging from the questions above, this must be a common problem. Do you have a procedure to fix this connection problem?

Thanks,
Jen

Well, a few days after I wrote the post above, I was finally able to get my internet connection working again. I tried everything, it seems, and as best I remember it, changing the IP address of each laptop is what fixed the system. Makes no sense, really, as I didn't DO ANYTHING to bring this problem on myself. I spent HOURS on the phone with Belkin, Toshiba, Cox, etc. What a waste of time. These systems need more redundancy and reliability.

I'll will be very interested in the answer to Jules as I have a similar problem. At home, I have the router connected to my PC and my daughter has a laptop with wireless. All this worked fine before she left for the summer. Now that she is back, her laptop sees the internet wireless connection but does not connect to the Internet. Now two weeks later, I moved my PC to another room and the same thing is happening to it. Connection is there but can't access the Web. I know that the adapter is working properly as I use it on my work laptop and everything is fine. Got any ideas for me too?

Thanks

Gab,

If the adapter works on a different device, then we know the router, modem, and adapter are working correctly. That leaves both your PC and other laptop.
Let's start with your PC,
click on start,
then control panel,
then network connections,
then right click on Local area connection (Or wireless depending), and select properties.
On the first window, select TCP/IP, then click the properties button,
Obtain an IP address automatically and DNS automatically should be selected. (if not, do so for now)

If that's ok, close the windows, click on start, then run, then type cmd and hit enter

Type ipconfig/all and copy and paste what you get on here.

A problem where the devices can see the network, but not the internet, usually has to do with the DNS Servers, so after you do your ipconfig/all, type the following,

ipconfig/release (then hit enter)
ipconfig/flushdns (then hit enter)
ipconfig/renew (then hit enter, and wait, it may take a minute)
ping news.google.com (then hit enter, if this replies, then you have internet access, if not, last step)
ping 74.125.19.104 (then hit enter, if this replies, you have internet, but not DNS, so you cannot type names to get to websites, and the fix is a tad more complex.

Let me know the results.....

Hi.

I'm having similar problems and was wondering if you can help. You were helping someone and told her to ping news.google.com. I tried that and I could not find the "host". Then I pinged 74.125.19.104 and got a response. You stated the fix is a bit complex.

Can you tell me about this fix. Thanks!

"ping 74.125.19.104 (then hit enter, if this replies, you have internet, but not DNS, so you cannot type names to get to websites, and the fix is a tad more complex.

Yes, this is what is happening to me as well. I tried everything but it seems it is not working. I have used the laptop on a different network and it works just fine.

How can I fix this problem?

Many thanks,

Anna

I cannot ping names of websites only numbers. The ping states packets are sent and dropped. Please can you type the solution for me, as you state it is a little more complicated to sort out the DNS. I phoned my cable company and they said I need to update my TCP/IP settings but couldn't help me! The LAN settings state computer is connected, I can use my laptop off the wireless, but cannot type web addresses to get internet. Get message stating this page is unavailable. Please can you help?

I think I'm having a similar problem. I was on the phone with Comcast tech support yesterday and tried the config/release and config/renew trucks but no go. The modem appears to eb working, the router appears to be working. I have an IP for the router and nothing for the internet and I keep getting the low/no connectivity message.

Hi TJ or Others:
I am having almost exact same problem. Have 5 computers at home, 3 wireless and 2 wired. The Dell Dimension 3000 cannot connect to browser (ie or ff) any longer. All other computers are working properly. I have tried it wired with various ethernet cables and wireless. When wired, connection states 100Mbps and wireless is 36Mbps with upwards of 500 packets sent in 60 min and 33 received. Son can play world of warcraft and aim, but no browser. Have don e system restore several times, worked first time, not any longer, even with older dates. Tried the tcpip settings, did not work. Here is my log from the ipconfig/all. Hello. i somehow have the same problem. all was working well with my laptop til today. can't totally connect to the internet. i did transfer the connection to my desktop to check if there's no really connection but it does have. and by the way i've noticed today that when i connect the modem to my laptop it doesn't have that blinking orange light anymore.

K9,

Your laptop cannot connect with a wired connection correct? If it's not getting a link light, (your orange one), you may have a bad cable, or a bad wired nic. can you connect your laptop to another's modem/router wirelessly? (At school, the library, work?) Did you recently have a power failure at your house? I've seen many a laptop lose a wired Network interface because of a surge....

Let me know....

Gab, you didn't lose me, I got caught up with way too much other things...my apologies.

On your desktop PC, you either have one of three things, a bad cable, a bad network card (Built in most likely), or my suspicion is a bad port on your router.

On your laptop, if it cannot receive an ip, which we all realize via the router's DHCP server, it should, I'm also suspecting your router.

Do you happen to have a spare around? Wired or wireless, it doesn't matter right now, we just need to see for sure that you can hook up a different router, and get an IP from both your desktop, and laptop. You may be able to search Craigslist and get one really cheap, else try a big box retailer to get one cheap and quick for probably around $25 or so, you don't need anything fancy like "Wireless N" or any of that, you just need a basic wireless router.

With that being said, what type of router do you have, you could try factory resetting the router, plug the PC into a different port, with a different cable, and see if it works. Get me the make/model and I'll talk you through it.

Hi TJ,
I have a strange problem. We have a router and 2 computers. One runs on vista and other on XP.
The one with vista, wont open websites in IE or Firefox(thought skype gets connected and i have done voice chatting which mean there is an internet connection). i tried to do repair /diagnose and it says windows cannot repair this connection, contact admin, might be problem with your Domain Name Server DNS configuration.
The other computer with XP just works fine with no issues. I tried changing cables and everything , but my vista computer doesn't seem to work. I did ipconfig and the router did assign a IP to the one with vista , but when i ping any website it cant connect.
i am wondering why just only skype works and why shoud it when there is no internet connection?
please help me out. i tried a lot of things but no success so far.

Hey Dasa and anyone else with this problem (IE/FF not working, but Skype working). I just fixed this on my friend's computer, at least temporarily.

After checking IPCONFIG and PING, everything seemed fine.

What it turned out to be, was that PROXIES had been setup for both browsers to point to a fake server.

I think Ad Aware removed the nasties, but the browsers were still wacked.

In IE, go to TOOLS > INTERNET OPTIONS > CONNECTIONS > LAN SETTINGS. Make sure that NOTHING is checked. if it is, uncheck it. Click OK, restart IE. You should be fine now.

In FF, go to TOOLS > ADVANCED > NETWORK > CONNECTION > SETTINGS. Make sure that you have DIRECT CONNECTION TO INTERNET selected. If anything else is in there, check off the first option as I suggested and erase anything else.

Hope this helps someone!

Thank you so much, dadafz. After trying every solution in this thread (ipconfig commands, verifying that ip/dns were set to automatic, running winsock fix, system restore, DNS manual/automatic setting, etc.) your solution, which took all of 3 seconds as it only involved unchecking two boxes , had me browsing in IE7 in no time.

Thank you TJ. Sorry, I did not mean to be impatient and no need to apologise. Of course, I understand that you have other things that need looking into.

My work laptop, thanks to which I am still connected to the Internet, uses my D-Link wireless adapter and my router (a D-Link too) so I know all that is working fine, which is why I am sort of baffled by all this.

tjmartineau, on Sep 23, 2008 3:25:49 am BST

You need to get onto the D-link router's configuration page....see if by chance there is a limitation with the number of DHCP clients that are able to connect. I sometimes only set that number to 1 or 2 depending on the client's connections so that way any other connections are rejected. Set it to a range of 10 or so if it's not.

Also while you are in there, there should be a status page, or a page that states something like, DHCP Client's list. Click on that, and see if there are any connections other than your work laptop. If all is like you state, there should only be one DHCP connection, your laptop. If there are any other connections, your security may have been breached if you have it enabled, if you don't, you'll need to enable some sort of security because your neighbors may be pulling off your network.

Look onto the back of your PC for a second, where your ethernet cable plugs in, do you have a green link light back there (a tiny green square should be lit right above the cables connector). If that is not lit, the adapter or the cable, or the port on your dlink is bad. First, try a different port on the dlink, if it lights up...good...if not...it's the cable or nic.

Let me know if you see anything odd in the dhcp client listing....I sure hope so....if not, and you do have a link light on your pc, we're going to have to factory reset the router and reconfigure it to see if that helps you. I'm heading to bed so I may not reply until morning...(I'm in Omaha, Nebraska, Central Time)

Good Luck and keep me posted...

Thank you TJ. Where can I see the router's config page? Is it possible from my work laptop or should I reconnect my PC directly to the router as it was before I moved it? I looked for it on this laptop but to no avail, maybe because I am connected with an adapter. Would it work if I try to connect my daughter's laptop directly to the router? I'll fill you in on the results later this evening.

To get to the config page...

Take your laptop and connect directly to your router.

Click start
then run
type 'cmd' then hit enter

type ipconfig
hit enter

the gateway ip address should be the modem's ip address. (Like 192.168.1.1 or something...)

Open up internet explorer, in the address bar, type that address, hit enter

Login - username is admin password should just be blank

The home networking thing....that's what we're going to accomplish here...

Hey so I have the same problem as above, and I was messing around on the config page. I reset the router/modem, and now I can't even access the config page. Any suggestions? Do I need a new router/modem and will it work with the ISP? Send me an email if you have something, I'd love anyone's anwers to this. After I do connect to the config page, what settings do I need to put in? I messed it up and lost internet, though the DSL light works, ports work, cable works. I know enough to screw it up, not enough to put it back together again. Thanks,

Hanibal -

I've had the same problem which started strangely at about the same time you reported yours...~4 weeks ago.
I don't have a full fix yet, but have traced part of the problem to an infection by a DNSChanger trojan which Norton didn't pick up. All the connections that were assigned were of the "169.xxx.xxx.xxx" variety.
I have a Dell Dimension 3000 using Windows XP as the os.

Running CounterSpy did ID one of the culprits, as well as a few other malware programs on my desktop PC. Unfortunately, I had to call my ISP to make sure the modem and DSL service were both intact & functioning. As of this moment, I can get to the internet ONLY BY TYPING IN THE IP ADDRESS of the site I want to visit...and even then I cannot use any of the links on the target page which require a DNS. If the links are IP addresses then it apparently works fine...but who does that on their websites these days?!

Get a free trial of CounterSpy, or other anti-malware, run it & quarrantine the indicated programs after creating a system setpoint. You may have to call your ISP & get the DNS addresses, etc, and force your machine to use them until you can isolate the keys in your registry which have been corrupted. The place to do that is in the connections tab of the IE you're using.

I have a new ethernet card from NetGear which is performing fine (the computer's built-in adapter I have deactivated for now), and had swapped out the modem for one I knew was working OK. Both are working fine, and my connection to the DSL is not in question. All the drivers for my original Intel Pro VE card were reinstalled from the maker's website, though they proved NOT to be the problem.
There is a trojan in my machine somewhere, but I'm still trying to pin it down & kill it. I'll be running through the registry with REGEDIT later today to see if I can find the "169.*" addresses in there.

And w/o internet ability, it is even harder to update anti-spy/malware definitions, and I have to ferry those items by mem stick to the infected desktop from where I am now (work). Whatever the thing is that's infecting my machine, I think it's a newer variant of the DNS trojan....

If/when I get the final fix or ID of the offender, I'll post more details.

Hannibal,

If another computer works fine, you've tried another NIC, and reformatted/reinstalled. The problem could very well be you network cable. You didn't mention that you've changed that.

Wee Alec's post might work for him, but you're not going to have that problem because you know your internet works just fine with another PC. You also have reformatted your hard drive, which is a simple way of erasing a trojan that is on your hard disk.

I've been on vacation with no internet for a while, so my apologies for not getting back to anyone. (It was a great month though!)

I have read all the above and am experiencing many of the same issues. I have connection to the internet, it can recognize website addresses through the numerical address but not by name. I have tried flushing the cache and following all of the steps provided in the above emails. But still no success. I had connection initially until I had done an update two days ago. It wasn't until the update that I lost connection. Is there someway, that I can fix the problem from here.

I had the same issue as you. the problem turned out to be of DNS. My PC coudn't find the DNS server so I just manullay gave the DNS address in Connection Properties>TCP/IP. It worked for me. Hope it works for others.
To see your present DNS, open connection status>Support>Details

Hope it works for others as well
