I just installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my computer (duel-boot Vista), and having problems connecting to my wireless broadband. The network shows up on my list, but when I enter the password, it doesn't connect. After a little while, where it's trying to connect, the passwordbox popps up, but the line with the password is filled with letters and numbers. I'm not too good with computers, especially not Linux, and have no idea whats wrong.

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 3.0.11
Ubuntu 9.04

Yes it is the password, case sensitive
Is the correct protocol selected on the Ubuntu box for the router. ie. there the same protocol with the same SSID and password. If you have entered all of this it should work
Setitng up wireless is easy. Same with bluetooth. These two are probably easier to set up on linux than windows, same with static ip's for wired
that said i could never get my old ubuntu box to connect to an old Netgear wireless router. that said i couldn't get windows to connect either. I do lie, i got the XP laptop to connect once for a period of about 10 minutes.
OOH
just thought under settings for network in ubuntu do you have a static ip address set up for wireless connectivity or DHCP (ip obtained by host)
check your routers setting maybe you have or someone else for you has set up MAC address limiting or assigned specific IP's to specific box names or limited the amount of IP's. I do this on my network's as a security measure. To prevent unauthorized access as well as WPA.
Let me know how you go

Did you find solution to this?
I have exactly the same problem. I just installed ubuntu 9.10 (dual-boot with windows vista). The password box pops up with the encrypted key already filled up using WEP, even when I already set it up to use WPA before connecting to my wireless router. And when I change it again to WPA and put my passphase, it still won't authenticate. I notice the same problem when I reinstalled windows vista, I have to install the realtek rtl 8187 driver from Gateway because it also won't connect after fresh install.

I have the same problem, at home and at work. At home I just removed the security key -left the router 'open' for my neighbours...- and it connects ok. At work, can't do that. And I cannot connect.

What kind of network card do you have?
Do a lspci and check for wireless somehting.
I have a Broadcom i a couple of machines, and i have noticed that the connection can be caught when very near the router. But after a while (and/or a moderate distance) the connection is dropped and it will not reconnect, until placed just beside the router.
This is the behaviour in 9.04 and in 9.10 it is similar(Slightly better It will connect with very low signal strength) but transfer rate is going up and down and eventually the kernel crashes.

Now Broadcom wifi have always been troublesome, so
I am considering to buy a new wifi card such as GNWI01GS (after some reading on the internet) Anyon knows if this will work?

I have a similar problem too. i have ubuntu 9.10, have my card set up, and it says it's connected to the network, but when i open firefox nothing shows up and i get a message that the server has timed out. I tested the card on another computer and it works, and i ran updates for ubuntu and it said it was downloading and they installed.

Hi Ben and everybody.
I have a very similar problem with Packard Bell EasyNote TJ65 and Intel WiFi Link 5100 Wireless LAN, in Ubuntu 9.10

Internet connection is very good with Win7, but nothing to do with Ubuntu (dual boot). I've tried to use Ethernet by cable (RJ45) too, but another time nothing to do.
I'm not able to find the rigth driver of Intel WiFi for Ubuntu: any idea?
thanks a lot

In the real spirit of Ubuntu-way-of life, I just visit a friend (really cool and Ubuntu experienced) with my Notebook.
He just plug the LAN cable and Internet was on-line!
Then system was updated, I went back home, put LAN cable, everything OK and wireless is working too, now.

I think that something has changed in-between.

Stay well
