No sound through headphone jack

Hello,
I have a Sony Vaio laptop and am running Vista. I am not getting any sound through the headphone jack when I try to play music or movies (I have tried different headphones). Regular speakers work fine. I went to the control panel and it says that the device is working and in fact they do work when I try the test and preview buttons. Yet I get nothing when I try and play any media.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Configuration: Windows Vista Internet Explorer 7.0
