Microsoft Product Ket trouble

Hey!
I was just wondering, cause I have this relitavley new laptop that has a microsoft product key on the bottom and i keep entering it correctly but it doesnt work. Somebody has already asked if you need a disk and another person said yes or you can got it online. How do I get it online is there a special site? Is it free and is it legal?
