Hello
"If you're like most PC users, you probably got Windows Vista with a new PC or laptop. And if you're like 99% of the population, you get your new machines from one of the major manufacturers. Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, they all have one thing in common: they don't give you a real Windows Vista installation disc with your purchase. Instead, they bundle what they call a "recovery disc" (that's if you're lucky - otherwise you'll have a recovery partition instead) with your machine and leave it at that. It doesn't matter that you just paid a thousand dollars for a machine that comes with a valid Windows Vista license - your computer manufacturer just don't want to spend the money (or perhaps take on the responsibility) of giving you a Windows Vista installation DVD to accompany your expensive purchase. The problem is, with Windows Vista, the installation media serves more than one purpose. It's not just a way to get Windows installed, it's also the only way of recovering a borked installation. The Windows Vista DVD has a "recovery center" that provides you with the option of recovering your system via automated recovery (searches for problems and attempts to fix them automatically), rolling-back to a system restore point, recovering a full PC backup, or accessing a command-line recovery console for advanced recovery purposes. Microsoft seems to have realized this problem, and have thankfully made a recovery disc for this purpose. It contains the contents of the Windows Vista DVD's "recovery center," as we've come to refer to it. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and just serves as a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, one could re-create this installation media with freely-downloadable media from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK kit, a multi-gigabyte download); but it's damn-decent of Microsoft to make this available to Windows' users who might not be capable of creating such a thing on their own. NeoSmart Technologies is hosting a copy of the Windows Vista Recovery Disc for your convenience. It is a 120 MiB download, and in the standard ISO format." |

Greetings,
I see that no one has replied to any of you. I run a computer consulting company and we have three systems in our shop with the same problems that you all describe. We know a lot about the problem, but not necessarily how to fix it. However, it might be useful to know some more things about this "black screen with cursor" no boot problem unique to Windows Vista: 1. All threats can be removed from the hard disk and the system still won't boot. 2. Peripherals such as modems and video cards have nothing to do with the problem. 3. It will not boot in Normal Mode, Safe Mode, or Safe Mode Command Prompt. 4. "chkdsk /f" fails to run. 5. If you wait 10-20 minutes at the black screen with cursor, the screen saver will run, but it still won't boot after the screen saver is disrupted. 6. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work anywhere. 7. Vista Startup Repair finds no problems. 8. Vista Startup Repair with System Restore runs through every backup only to fail at the end ("File is Corrupted or Unreadable" error). 9. If you delete the Windows Vista licence files (two most recent files in C:\windows\system32 with long strange file names), the system will boot and work, but it will force you to re-register Windows. If you do this, you'll have to call Microsoft and lobby for a new product key. In some cases this fixes the problem, but in others the problem returns after a few boots. Sorry we don't have a thorough fix, but since this problem is so widespread, perhaps what we have learned will help someone else to come up with a true fix. Best regards, Shaun BFE Technologies |
i was doing system restore on vista. then i shut my laptop halfway through and i re-started my computer and then it says preparing to boot OS then it shows nothing but a blank black screen with a cursor!
help!! |
Same problem on brand new machine build using a retail Vista Ultimate 64 disk (upgrade version. I got around the XP requirement by getting on phone with MS and DEMANDING that they work me through this without having me install XP. I absolutely refuse to do this, this is unacceptable and I will push it as many times as I have to reinstall over the life of this computer. Requiring the OS to be on for an upgrade will NOT happen and I am letting as many folks know of this as possible, they WILL give in on this. We need a utility to allow simple install of Vista FROM AN UPGRADE DISK. Nothing else is acceptabe. Ok now back to the subject..)
I just encountered this on the new build (less than 2 days old now and formerly "working" ok ) At first would do an automatic boot over and over until running the "Repair" function from the Vista install disk. then would at least boot, but gets to welcome screen and leaves it black. I know it makes it there, because the routine the positions the cursor on the login selection works and the cursor is left there, but no image. I tried deleting the two most recent files in the system32 folder, but no dice for me. I did save them in another folder on the HD in order to restore them if needed. If you got anything else please post, I will do same -Jeff Oliphant Incorporated Data Architecture Solutions |
I formated my comp but windows didn't install prooaly and it said to restart instalation, so I turn it off and nowI get a black screen the a message that says "read disc error press crt-alt-delete to restart." so I do what it says but it just keeps reapeating the samething. So now I can't use my comp at all, and windows won't install and I didn't get a disc with my comp either. What do I do? |
Wait ten minutes and your screen will appear. It's done it to me numerous times.

Same problem on new Dell Insp. I took the 10 min wait time a bit further and left it run overnight,. with no luck. It does seem that the only solution so far is to format and reinstall. |
i think jst connect your laptop to your TV and then you can see hows your computer running.
i think that your laptop had lost the software to connect your monitor to you laptop so it doenst works. i got same problem on my HP Tx1120us thats suck. |
Hey, I had the same problem. Found a fix:
I loaded my computer from my installation fix and did a system restore. Windows had installed an update, don't know which, so I selected to restore to a point before the update was installed. Re-started and the welcome screen is no longer black. Hope it helps
