I know a lot of the advice in this thread is garbage because I've had the same issue myself. First, I had this malware install itself without permission and then spread like wildfire. Booting into safe mode is useless because somehow this malware attaches itself to system files and loads even in safe mode. The software is also designed to lock you out of any part of Windows that can help you stop it... msconfig, services.msc, gpedit.msc, regedit, cmd, and services.msc are all blocked. Additionally, one cannot use task manager to defeat the process as it instantly closes itself every time it is loaded. Worse, is one cannot run any exe file, such as antivirus programs to defeat it.
There are only two tricks I've found to temporarily give yourself some room to work. One, go into Windows and the System 32 folder. Rename your taskman.exe to something else. You will then have access to run task manager and kill the numbered file (something like 993334454.exe) and stop the processes causing the problems. I seem to have two processes associated with the problem, one a numbered process and another an SD letter number combination. I have to kill both processes. Both of these reside in different folders. The first, the numbered files reside in your documents and settings, application data folder (hidden folder). Once the process is killed, delete the folder. The SD letter/number combination resides in your Windows/Temp folder. Clear the temp folder.
Now, use your run prompt to conjure msconfig. In the start-up tab, uncheck the numbered file and the SD/combo file if it exists. Apply and okay. You will be prompted for a restart, you may do so.
Here's the second part of what I noticed... This malware only seems to have the ability to spread when there's an active internet connection. For example, if you disable your ethernet card, it doesn't spread on your next start up (after following the above steps). Once the ethernet card is enabled, it starts to spread itself again. You can thwart these attacks by opening up your task manager killing the process and deleting the files/folders when they start to show up again. So far, it has kept the attack at-bay. However, I've still yet to find a way to kill the spread.
Here's what I've tried (so you don't waste your time):
Spyware Doctor (with a license): Finds the infection, claims to have removed it and yet it continues to spread.
Spysweeper: Found a portion of the infection, claims to have removed it and yet it continues to spread.
Spybot: Found Nothing.
Malwarebytes: Install and then disappears when you hit the scan button
Norton 2009: Installs and then will not run after restart
My final thoughts, the virus, even when not active, causes antivirus programs not to run after a reboot. If you do not reboot, these programs simply disappear. This is an intelligently engineered piece of malware that will require a versatile piece of software for removal. While it's not a hassle to the system at this time, it still leaves me open to further attack and I still have to waste my time killing processes and deleting folders to stop the spread.
If anyone has successfully rid their PC of this annoying plague, please feel free to describe what you did to do it.
Meanwhile, I hope my advice gives a few people some room to at least use their PC normally...
