Reasigning USB Devices

bluenite7, on Sunday June 15, 2008 01:48:03 PM
Hello,

What is the correct procedure for reassigning a USB device to a port other than the one it was originally connected to?
Case in point: I disconnected all external devices from my desktop in order to move it. When I reconnected the mouse I must have used a different USB port than the original. Result: The mouse did not operate (until I finally figured out where it had been connected before). Although I did not receive a "Device not recognized' warning, XP did not attempt to recognize and assign it.

Thanks.
Configuration: Windows XP
Internet Explorer 6.0

Hello

I am not sure about reassigning the port used, but in my experience when the device is plugged into a different port the pc/laptop sees it as a new device. Usually the mouse won't work right away, but if you give it a couple minutes the pc/laptop will load the drivers and it will start working. Never heard of it not working before just because the usb port was changed. If it still didn't work you could force the pc to try to detect new hardware, but you would have to use the keyboard to move around
