I have had the same problem and plugging a VGA cable directly from laptop to TV does work but you lose the HDMI digital picture feature. That's the whole point of using HDMI is to get HD quality picture. When I use the VGA to HDMI converter, I'm noote getting the picture displayed on the TV. How do you get that to work?

You need to select the display option and enable both screens, enlarge the resolution and hey presto the image will appear on the tv as well.

You probably need to hit function f7 or something on your laptop in order for it to switch from the display on the laptop to the external monitor (ei plasma tv)

I have a New Vizio HDMI HDTV and SONY VGN-Z610Y. I have the HDMI cable connected. Sometimes it works perfectly but it seems to have something to do with turning something on while something is plugged in or not and done first or some combination of frustration. It's worked before but I am stumped as to why it gives me the ... "No Signal!" message now ... anyone?
