Question

Hello,
i just bought the game Sims 3 and I can create a sim, but as soon as I go into building mode or even to play with the sim, it freezes, and then it goes black. I have all the requirements for the game. but I dont know what I should do about not being able to play the game in build mode, or live mode

Sounds like it's your graphics card, is it Nvidia? My game would run for a few minutes and the computer would just switch itself off. 

So, if your card is Nvidia, you should do the following, it worked for me!!!

1 - Open the Control Panel
2 - Open the Nvidia Control Panel
3 - At the top of the Control Panel, select "Advanced Settings"
4 - Select "Advanced"
5 - On the side menu, click "Manage 3D Settings"
6 - Change "Conformant Texture Clamp" to "Use OpenGL specification"
7 - Change "Force Mipmaps" to "Trilinear"
8 - Change "Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization" to "On"
9 - Change "Vertical Sync" to "Force On"

Save your new changes and it should do the trick!

Try playing in windowed mode - Change the setting in the main menu as you start the game, before you choose your town. this seems to have worked with some ppl. Also, in windowed mode, reduce your resolution slightly. This reduces the strain on your pc's Graphics card. Hope this helps!

Whenever I play the Sims 3 on my computor it crashes after 2-20 mins of gameplay. When it crashes it just freezes n whatever u press it wont do anything, u just have 2 turn off the computor via the power button. I'v deleted loads of my other games and have 2 gig of spare free memory. I've installed all updates n everything but it still freezes!

hi ive been havin the exact same problem, but before it used to be worst wen im on create a sim the screen turns multicolored n blotchy so I called them up and they told me to type in dxdiag in run in the start menu and a window should come up  direct x diagnostic tool wen it finished loadin click save all information n save it on desktop. Then open it up look 4 were it says card name it should say the card name n then a year nxt 2 it. U may have to update it if it is old. You can do this by going on google and type in ati website and then watever your current card name is download the lastest version. Although after I done all this the game still freezes. but it worth a try

Quick question. Are you all or some of you running the bare minimum requirements? It would help more if you listed the actual specs of your computers. Remember the game has listed the "requirements" for the game to run, but they do not say "FANTASTIC game play with this minimum requirements". 

My suggestion to those that have at least 2GB RAM, Dual COre Processors, and 512MB Video (that works with SIMS3) 

You may have so much starting up on your computer taking up half of your RAM from the start. Are you running Vista? XP? Those two will play a major role when it comes to sims3 play and your Memory avail.

I highly recommend you check out this free little tool (its far better than any System Task Manager by far) to see what actually is running on your machines, and what you can or cannot shut down on start up or while running the game.

I hate that fact that all these software companies think we want their little piece of heaven to load on each system boot. Its annoying yes, but we as PC owners have to keep it under control. Find out whats running and much more by this free tool. https://www.gtopala.com/   Get the Standalone English Version (No Need for Pro) or get the multi language if needed.

Once you investigate a bit more to find out what you can safely shut down you may find Sims runs better. Another GREAT place to review is Black Vipors helpful settings. He tells you what you can safely shut down in the OS and more. Like what is the default, and if it is needed and why. i had that problem too, but its cause your video card for your computer is not updated. 
go to the website of which your video card brand is (for example direct X) and see if your video card
is up to date. chances are its not if its doing that.

My original Sims3 is turning fine on my aldi netbook and that means that the system requirements are really very low. SIMS3 Graphics are not much better then on my ATARI or Commodore 30 years ago.My Childrens game computers are freezing even after installing the last ATI and NVIDIA drivers(CTRL-Alt-Delete doesn't work). Quad processor and dual processors doesn't matter the problem is propably in the EA protection system. Why do I think that it is the EA protection system? The cracked SIMS3 version that I downloaded to try is turning 100%. Thank you EA because people who bought the game can't play it. I think some people at EA games should look for an other Job before EA loses lots of clients.

I really hope that EA can find a solution otherwise this is the last time I buy EA games for my children.

i bought the sims 3 a few days ago nd the same thing happens! its sooo annoyin ! 
i brought the game back thinkin there was a fault etc... in the game! the man at the shop told me to type in DXDIAG in the "search " part of your "start area".He also gave me a new copy of the game!
i went home and I did what he told me and looked through dxdiag ..... turns out I only have 2086mb r somtin of memory! :O:O:O

Yo, I'm getting exactly the same problem.. the whole computer freezes and the only way is to restart.

I have a brand new comp with quad core, nvidia gtx 260 and 4 gig of ram so I know my computer is wayyyyyyy above the requirements..

So it's the game that is bugged? Let's hope they can fix it pretty soon.. Releasing a game that crashes on people's computers for no apparent reason is pretty embarassing on EA's part.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem, except it all loads fine until I get to the part where it loads the town. It gets to about a quatre of the way then suddenly switches off. I think there might be something blocking it? 
It works fine on my PC and there are no problems what so ever, but its annoying me that it dosnt work on my laptop :@
we all need help now, EA must do something about it.

Hey my computer is almost new so when I bought the sims 3 I thought there would be no problems, but as soon as I got into build and live mode I could play about five minutes. After the five minutes my computer would go to a black screen, then say not responding. I thought this was a one time thing, but it did it countless times. Eventually I called the sims 3 helpline ((in the back of one of your guides in the game holder of the sims)) they said to check all your requirements and disk space to play the sims. When I did they were all better than required. I called them back again and told them that my reuirements are good and they told me that I needed a new graphics, so I went and bought a new graphics card. I installed it then tried the sims3 It still didn't work. I was really mad because graphics cards cost like 30$. Now I called the graphics card hotline and asked my question why the sims3 was not working they said they have been having countless people been asking about it he said there is really nothing we can do. So pretty much I would recommend that you take it back from where ever you bought the game and ask for a new one. Then in a couple of days take it back at a different time with the receipt so there is a new cashier and tell them your would like to return it and they should give you the money, but remember don't open it when they give you a new one.            SO REALLY THE SIMS 3 COMPANY REALLY SOLD US CRAP THAT DIDN"T EVAN WORk!

It really sucks that it happens. It shouldn't happen at all seeing it's so new.

The same thing is happening to my Sims 3 and I don't know how to fix it. When I first got the game, it worked fine then it started crashing a few days later. I tried playing without custom content but it still didn't work. Some people said to re-install it but my Sims 3 was downloaded(legally). It took a few days to download it and it will take that long again and I can't wait that long. Is there any way to do it without re-installing it?

Everyone! don't believe anyone who tells u to update ur graphics card, or u don't meet the minimum requierments and all that crap!!
actually some of us have the best graphics card and stuff, and we don't need to update anything!, I found out why this thing is not responding and acts really slow while playing and sometimes freezing, yesterday I thought of removing my mods folder from the sims 3 directory, I moved it to the desktop, and resorce.cfg too, when I played the game... YES! IT DIDN'T TURN TO THAT BLACK SCREEN AND IT'S FAST AND ALL! I got it back to what you used to be before I have this not responding problem
Yes, it's a download!, I'm sorry for these ppl who didn't install any mods or cc, I dunno what's your problem, but I hope you find out soon, but to those ppl who used to play the game with no crashes or anything and suddenly it began to turn to that dang black screen, CHECK UR DOWNLOADS!, there must be a hack or a mod or even a HAIRSTYLE! some ppl's mods or hacks are corrupted or maybe damages the game, even hairstyles, I read so many problems about installing peggy hairs and causing their game to crash, even if it's not peggy, it must be these unkown hairstyles, like converted ones or whatever

the sims 3 acts so weird with CC, The sims 1 and the sims 2 didn't have so much problems with them though

Hello again!

I just thought I should share something that has stopped my game from crashing...

Before I used to have Vista... We all love Vista, right? -__- *coughs*
Anyways, I ended up installing XP on my laptop and now my Sims 3 ain't crashing at all.
I have no idea if there's a bug in Vista that makes the game crash or maybe I was just being lucky... 
I've had a few problems with other games as well when I had Vista, and now that I use XP every single one of them runs smoother and there's no problems at all.

Anyways, lets hope EA finds out what's actually wrong and fixes it...

Wether or not you're playing on a laptop that shouldn't have anything to do about the cause that it crashes. Do you have any idea how many people who actually game with laptops? ^^
If you have a decent laptop that meet the requierments for the game there is nothing that says you shouldn't be able to play on it. Lets see...

Sims 3 was doing all this on my PC. So I put it on my laptop, which isn't even a week old yet. It still doesn't work. 5 min. in and it shuts down. I've tried to e-mail customer service, but neither of my computers will let me. The say the license agreement is corrupted with their server. Or something to that effect. Does anyone know if there is a phone number to contact them? I bought my game on-line so I don't have a customer help number. Also for future reference, it took 18+ hours to down load to my computers!

I was able to patch the game with the recent patch provided by EA and when I started playing the game, I had the problem. After creating a family I was able to move them into a house, but I wanted to build a house from scratch. so what I done was I went to Edit town in the menu and clicked the appropate area. however, when I tryed putting a wall down, it froze, so I tried again. then after the third try it froze completly, and went straight back onto the desktop of my computer.
But like I said, I had it installed months ago and work fine, its only recently when I reinstalled it, the problem happens. im really annoyed and want to play the game in peace.


[update] I also cannot access the options on the game, as I click it, nothing happens.

Now I have reinstalled the game and I have turned the automatic updates OFF. I booted it up and the game now works fine. I hope this helps.

My comp freezes after every 5 minutes of gaming. The sims 3 was hit first and I tried EVERYTHING to get it to work. I deleted the mods that I downloaded at the time I was playing and any after the date I last played when it still worked. I reinstalled it. Nothing worked. Then I installed sims 2 because I wanted to play sims. But guess what? It STILL froze after 5 minutes. I dont know what to do. Please help! I was having the same problem but I went to sims3.com and e-mailed them and they told me to download the easy tool and I did and I found out that my pocessor was too slow for the game. And that means that will run for a while till you get to some part that is too hard on you processor(by the way you need at least 2.00ghz processor).

Guys don't worry I've had a fimilar problem Here I will explain.
I've bought sims 3, with less than the system requirements, it works excellent.
amazing graphics, and sound.
gameplay is amazing.

I downloaded the game with only 3gb of hard drive (less)
and alot more less.

laptops might let the game work more smoothly because, My one doas not check the system requirements, (lazy).
I've got a compact, I used to have a newer version of the acer aspire, they both worked fine.
Pc's check every file.
About this problem, your graphics card (mainly for Pc users) is struggling to keep up use the in game tools
to lower the graphics and maybe the sound.

My problem is that I inserted the game and it says there is no card in the cd-rom drive, (weird).
Can anyone help me, I'm downloading the newest patch now. hopefully this will work!

Dispite what you think, Sims 3 does not work properly on Vista 64bit, only on 32bit.  I'm having a battle with EA games right now trying to return the stupid game, because I refuse to spend more money to get the requirements for the game (upgrading to Windows 7, which doesn't have a patch yet to move from Vista Home to 7). 

If you have 64 Vista, you're screwed, because EA games will not do a thing. Trust me.

ok, I thought I was the only one that had this problem... but apparently everyone is having this problem... I can play in Build mode for hours and the game runs smoothly... but right when I try to play in live mode, the game completely stops and the screen goes black... I try to ctrl alt delete but that doesnt work. I have to turn off the computer via power switch... my pc definitely accedes the requirements for sims 3 to play, so I know its not my comp.  Well, im not a computer genius or anything, ive tried several things but nothing has worked... Hello Sims 3 users.. At least make sure that there's space on your computer to make the game work..If it does'nt work then do this little hint(cheat) to help you.


1. Press CTRL, SHIFT, ALT , AND C(all together)..I don't know if this will work but it works on my sims 2 games..

2. If it works. You will see a blue box with a white strip on the bottom.Click the strip then press tab it would say something like auto patch then you enter. Bascily what auto patch is doing for you is fixing the problems with the game.So you Likely probably wont have any problems with the game.(hopefully)

3.If your game Freezez,and blacks out again then well.It probably did'nt work..If you really want your game fixed and you need hints on how to make it stop doing such an idiotic thing, then you should probably call Ea,or what/who/company made this game. Or you could go to Thesims3.com click contact.(if its there) and send them an email about how you've been having problems with your game. Probably they would have the contact number but if they say they don't know ask them questions like: Did you perpare the software correctly. and did you check your data files and things like that maybe they would answer another important one is if you ask them if they tested there product over and over and over..Maybe that should help you but I was glad to share that information with all of you sims3 users.

It sounds like a registry problem to me try downloading and installing CCleaner, its free and should help you remove it for good and then you can do a clean install

MAYBE, it's not working for some of you because you are using a MAC hahaha! They have all sorts of problems right out of the box, and don't forget that you pay a small fortune for one when you could build a computer that's 3 times better for the same price.. Plus you can't really do anything important with a MAC (or even play a game correctly for that matter!)

no everyone is probably wrong this same thing happened to me, your computer might not meet the requirements of the game. like you hard drive or ram might be to low so I suggest going by best buy or wherever you bought the computer and getting it added its not to expensive and nt mine works fine. and if it doesnt work you can just have them take it off and try something else. its worth a shot

I had exactly the same problem when I first got the sims 3, too. If you have a laptop, does it feel like it get really hot underneath? If so, it is probably overheating. I have to make sure there is a gap underneath mine somehow, by wedging it between books. Mine never crashes as long as I make sure air can get underneath. As soon as I stop doing it, it overheats and crashes again. It's such a simple solution, but it helped me.

try this ! when ur game start to not responding press ctrl-alt-del ,wait 3 sec, if nothing hapen press S "for sim3 processus" then press del "for kill procesus ", and then enter " for Yes I want to end sim3.exe"

I have the Sims 3 as well. My house has 3 computers and 2 of them were old and out of date but I could still use it. The sims 3 doesn't work on old computers so maybe that is your problem. It works on our new computer.

Fixing the sims 3 is hard but if you go into windowed mode, (I got this from someone else) it works quite alot better. It crashes sometimes or freezes up but if so, Press ctr>alt>delete and that also works for minimizing the game. If you go on  youtube I reccomend Jay012345678912 Lets play the sims 3. He is hilarious and funny and puts a smile on your face!

The 'Graphics' tab should be opened by default.
Uncheck the 'Enable Fullscreen Mode' button.

Esc the came. and wait to see at the bottom it will say something like disc player stopped responding has recovered and go bac, on. 
Hope this helps, and also wipe the game before u put it in.

Well, this happens to me too, but I think you need to make your your updates are up to date. I have norton virus and it basically scans for up dates but I do not have internet so its a problem but if you have then great. it should work. I think. Just a suggestion.

Quick question. Are you all or some of you running the bare minimum requirements? It would help more if you listed the actual specs of your computers. Remember the game has listed the "requirements" for the game to run, but they do not say "FANTASTIC game play with these minimum requirements". 

My suggestion to those that have at least 2GB RAM, Dual Core Processors, and 512MB Video (that works with SIMS3) 

You may have so much starting up on your computer taking up half of your RAM from the start. Are you running Vista? XP? Those two will play a major role when it comes to sims3 play and your Memory avail. 

I highly recommend you check out this free little tool (its far better than any System Task Manager by far) to see what actually is running on your machines, and what you can or cannot shut down on start up or while running the game. 

I hate that fact that all these software companies think we want their little piece of heaven to load on each system boot. Its annoying yes, but we as PC owners have to keep it under control. Find out what's running and much more by this free tool. https://www.gtopala.com/ Get the Standalone English Version (No Need for Pro) or get the multi language if needed. 

Once you investigate a bit more to find out what you can safely shut down you may find Sims runs better. Another GREAT place to review is Black Vipers helpful settings. He tells you what you can safely shut down in the OS and more. Like what is the default, and if it is needed and why. I am not 100% sure on this, but I know that you aren't the only ones.
I think that this is a global thing, which is why the website is down.  
You don't have to be connected to the internet to play the game, but maybe there is a patch/update that we all need...that we can't get yet because the forum is down.

Wait it out a few days, it should be up and working again (the game and site).

If your computer is anything like mine you should try going to the games section and look at your game rating. Sims 3 requires a rating of 3.5 minimum and 4.5 is recommended.
