Hi, I've just got the same proble, with mine. I've tried everything, even uninstalling it. How do I get the new driver software that I'm supposed to install? It says that its all up to date but it clearly isn't as it won't recognise it. I'm getting really frustrated as this is my 3rd sony MP3 player! Please help!

Chaz, please reply to my email address. I do not like communicating through the forum.

I will be happy to help you as best I can. I can't gaurantee anything, but I will try.

Please provide me with the following information: the operating system you are using; the make/model of the Sony mp3-player you are trying to install; the Windows Media Player version you have on your computer; the steps you have taken so far that have resulted in failure.

I will reply with a series of steps you will need to take on your computer. In order for me to get a more exact idea of how your computer is reacting, it will be necessary for you to take a screen shot of your display and send it to me,. This is accomplished by depressing the prnt scrn (print screen) key at each step you take.

Once you have depressed the print screen key, you have "copied" what is being displayed on your computer screen into your computer's memory. You will then need to "paste" that copy into a program so I can see it.

The easiest program to use is Window's Paint. You can find this in Start/All programs/Accessories/Paint.

Once you have the Paint program opened, all you need to do is go to "File" up on the top and then click on "New". You should then get a white screen inside the paint program. On this screen you will then right click your mouse and then select "paste".

Then you need to send this to me. The easiest way to do this is by saving what you have pasted in Paint, and then sending that to me as an attachment in any email. Once I receive it, I can open the attachment and then see what iis on your computer screen.

Understand what I have just described? I know it seems like a lot of steps, but it becomes routine after you have done it a few times. There is an easier way for me to see what you have on your screen, but you would need to know how to use Windows NetMeeting or some similar type of file sharing program. You would also need to have a web-cam hook up of some kind on your computer. This would allow me to observe your display "live", or as things are happening on your screen right at the moment.

You will end up sending me about ten to fifteen emails with attachments I have found (from helping others who have asked me questions or for help similar to yours).

I hope I can help you.

best,
-bobby klein

Hello...I came across your post while searching for a fix. I have HP Pavillion running Windows Vista 32 bit. I have a SansaClip and a Creative Zen. Never had a problem with them. I subscribe to Rhapsody with both devices. Then one day Rhapsody says that neither device is a subscription device but they are. Then WMP says that they are using outdated drivers but they are both up to date. I tried them on a friend's computer running XP and it does the same thing. I borrowed a friend's SansaClip to try on my laptop and it did the same thing. I purchased a Crayola MP3 player for my son and it does the same thing. I can drap/drop music as a storage device but that's not how I want to have to do it. Like I said, everything worked fine for about a year. All other USB devices work fine. Any idea what could have caused this or how I can fix it?

Please contact me through my email address : klein_ bobby @ hotmail. com. I do not find communicating through this forum very expedient, nor efficient, when I am trying to help somebody and we are working together.

I have intentionally inserted spaces in my email address so the automatic bots, which crawl the forums, will not be able to harvest my email address for their spam customers. You might want to remember this little known (but critically important) tip anytime you think about writing your email address ANYWHERE on the internet.

Please provide me with the following information: your make and model computer; the operating system you are currently using; the current version of the Windows Media Player on your computer; the make and model of the device you are having problems with.

I will need you to provide me with screenshots of your computer screen, so I may be more better informed about what is occurring on your screen. In lieu of me being able to hook up live to your computer remotely via Microsoft's WIndow Remote or NetMeeting, the next best thing you can provide me with are screen shots.\

This is accomplished by using the <prnt scrn> PRINT SCREEN key on your keyboard. I know this will be time consuming, and quite possibly appear redundant, but I am sorry about that. This can not be helped. You will need to take a "snapshot" of your computer screen (using the print screen key) at each junction...each step... of the process, then email me that snapshot as an attachment.

Here is how you do that: Each time you depress the print screen key, the image of your current computer screen is stored (or COPIED) in memory. You then need to PASTE it somewhere in order to see it. I have found the best and the easiest program to PASTE the results of the print screen key is Window's PAINT.

You can find the PAINT program here: START/All Programs/Accessories/PAINT.

Open the PAINT program. Go to FILE and click on NEW. On the white screen in PAINT, place you cursor anywhere and right click and select Paste. The image of whatever was on your screen when you depressed the print screen key ought to come up. If it hasn't, you've made a mistake. Go back and retrace your steps.

Once you have pasted the contents of your print screen key, save this as a file...perhaps on your desktop, or anyplace where you can easily access it.

Next, call up your Email program and send me an email with the file you just saved as an attachment. Now, in order to be more expedient and efficient, I heartily recommend you not send me one file at a time; rather, take a series of print screen snapshots documenting what is wrong, and what you are seeing on your display, and send them to me all at once.

Repeat the same thing, if you want, when you implement the steps I am going to recommend.

I hope I can help you. Please let me know if I have done so. I am not a professional troubleshooter or someone who works in tech support. I had the same issue that everyone else is complaining about on the forum. I stumbled around for weeks, trying out tis and trying out that and nothing worked. Finally, I came across the solution and I posted it on the forum. I then invited anyone to contact me if they needed further assistance, but I never expected the delugbe of responses I have received. My email notifier goes off night and day now <grin>.

Regards,
-bobby klein

Greetings, I had the IDENTICAL issue with my Sony Walkman. All of my computers suddenly, and without warning, would no longer recognize the Walkman. After a frustrating effort, I finally figured out how to fix it. If you would like me to provide you with the fix, just email me, or reply to this post, and I will give it to you. It takes three clicks of the mouse and two seconds to fix. It is unbelievably easy. I can't believe even Sony Support hasn't figured this out yet. I ended up providing them with the answers too, when it was they who should have been giving me the explanation and the answer to how to fix this. By the way, this fix works with ALL portable devices (mp3 players), not just the Walkman.

1.) Connect the sansaclip device.
2.) Navigate to the device manager, expand the "portable devices" category, right click on the "sansaclip" device, and then click on "uninstall". Proceed through any prompts to finish the uninstallation.
3.) Click the "action" pull-down menu (at the top of the device manager) and then click on "scan for hardware changes". The Walkman should be redetected and reinstalled.

Please let me know if this works, ok.

I happy you found a way to get your unit to work.

I've never even heard of a sansaclip mp3 player. Who makes it?

How did you manage to figure out your solution? What was the inspiration to try what you did?

What type of operating system are you using on your computer? How long did your player work on your computer before your computer stopped recognizing it?

Hi Bobby,

I'm having the same problem. I tried the Device Manager uninstall twice and it does not work.

Running Windows XP SP3.

My device does show in device manager, but not in Windows Explorer. There is even an audible sound when I plug in the device, yet no change in explorer. The same cable and port used with a camera, worked fine.

Any other suggestions would be gratly appreciated.

I have the 2GB Sony MP3 Walkman that won't connect. Question for BOBBY K: Where in the Device Manager is the 'Portable Devices" Located ? It's not in Windows XP on my Compaq laptop or my Gateway PC .I've tried other methods to fix this with NO success.

bobby klein, on Aug 25, 2009 8:17:20 pm BST

You have to plug in your Walkman to the USB2 cable first before you bring up Device Manager. If you don't, then Walkman will not appear in the Device Manager under Portable Devices.

Another place you might want to look in the Device Manager is the last category, "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". Walkman may be listed there instead of under Portable Devices. But the same still holds true: you must first connect the Walkman to the computers USB2 cable before you bring up the Device Manager.

If you don't know how to bring up the Device Manager, you can find it in the Control Panel.

Does this answer your question?

You are presuming that the computer IS RECOGNIZING IT or some kind of storage device Bobby. If it is not connecting,.......then it is not being recognized either. I have read tons of confusion over this subject. You won't find it ANYWHERE in the computer (unless theres a recognized error or software problem) if it doesn't even connect. Ive tried the USB listings...its not there and is only there WHEN IT IS WORKING. No yellow triangle. It was working earlier for about 5 seconds on the laptop and then it lost the connection with the computer. I tried the HOLD button gimmick for the SANSA with no success.

Hi Roy,

I must be the only cat in the world whose computer did not recognize it but it did show up in Device Manager then.

For weeks I could not get it to work. The computer would not recognize my Walkman in the directory at all, but it was showing up in Device Manager, Why this is, I don't know. I am not than educated in the digital arts.

This fix was given to me by my friend who is the chief technical support guy at Falcon Northwest Computer Systems. It took him all of thirty seconds to come up with this answer.

I'm sorry you are having such frustration with it. Believe me, I know how you must be feeling. I was ready to pull my hair out.

I wish I could offer you a solution. Better still, I wish I could offer you an explanation why what I was told works. I applied this fix to every single one of my computer. They all were not recognizing my Walkman, and they all benefited from this fix IMMEDIATELY.

Best,
-bk

Which email am I sending this to? I got a failed delivery report for the one at the top of the page. I will try and follow the steps. I currently have windows vista on an Acer laptop. I have a Sony NWZ-S618F MP3 player. I have windows media player 11 i think. I attempted the first series of steps you suggested, when the computer did register my MP3 player after 3 hours of nothing, I tried to update driver software, but i could not. My computer did not give me the choice of USB storage media as the driver to update for some reason. I will try and get the screen up again, though i don't know if i can as the computer won't even note that an unknown device has been connected anymore. I then tried the second set of instructions at the bottom of the forum page of uninstalling the device. the next time i connected it and it registered, it said that software was being installed but it failed twice then said it had succeeded but there has been no change in my problem. The windows media player just tells me to connect the device.

Hi everyone - i've found another solution - quick and simple:

(1) open your device manager
(2) search your device (sony mp3 players are shown as WALKMAN)
(3) open properties and click "update driver"
(4) do not connect to the internet for driver search, install from specific location (advanced), don't search - choose driver manually
(4) choose "usb storage device" as driver
(5) driver will be installed, be happy =)
