Hello,
my toshiba model HDDR250E03X external hard drive can't be read by my computer. please help

Configuration: Windows XP Internet Explorer 7.0

See other advice here -- the drive must be formatted before use. Go to My Computer, Manage, Storage, Disk Management. You should see the drive listed there (assuming it's plugged in to a USB 2.0 port with enough power), and should be able to format it as NTFS.

But wont' formatting erase all the data on the hard drive? I've been using a Maxtor One-Touch III drive for backups on my Lenovo laptop running OS/XP-pro. The laptop crashed yesterday, and I'm setting up a Dell Inspiron desktop running Vista-Home. The new computer sees the Maxtor drive as a device, but won't populate the data - I keep getting prompted to format it. That would erase all the data - which is the reason I want it! Any advice for this?
