Internet problam with netgear adapter

Hello,
I have just got a new pc today and trying to connect it to my router that is on pc 1 , it wont work i have plugged in the adapter to pc 2 ( the new 1 ) and it wont connect to the internet it show up that the adapter is reconised but it says the local network is not working has a red x between the computer picture and the internet sign please help as soon as possible thanks

Configuration: Windows Vista
Firefox 2.0.0.20
