KB891711

It seems that there is a problem with the patch KB891711 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows Me, Below is a procedure advocated by Microsoft:


First, I would like to explain Microsoft has received reports about issues with KB891711 on Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME. Our testing before release of this update did not reveal problems. We are investigating the reports of this issue with the goal of providing an appropriate resolut
ion. That resolution may be to document a workaround for the issue or a new update posted to the Windows Update site. We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused and look forward to having a resolution very soon.

In the meantime, I recommend you perform the steps below to workaround the issue:

Step One: Boot to Safe Mode

1. Restart your computer.
2. While your computer restarts, press down and hold the CTRL until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.
4. Check the issue again.

Step Two: Disable KB891711
==================

1. Click Start->Run.
2. Type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. Click Startup tab and uncheck "KB891711".
4. Click OK and restart the computer to test the issue.

Step Three: Remove updates
==================

1. Boot to Safe Mode first.
2. Click Start->Settings->Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Remove "Windows 98 KB891711 Update".
5. Click OK and restart the computer to test the issue.
