Using TrueType font without installing it







TrueType has been conceptualized by Apple around 1980 to compete against the Type 1 fonts created by Adobe at that time. Today, the font is mostly used by graphic designers as the pixel-level of this font is really precise in quality. The font is used by installation but becomes a big inconvenient when there are a lot of fonts that are being installed on the computer.

There is a simple solution online that allows the user to manage his fonts with operating systems like Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT. The program is called The Font Thing is available at http://members.ozemail.com.au/~scef/tft.html

Features of The Font Thing


The features of this freeware enclose the following:
  • Allows the user to browse for installed and not yet installed fonts
  • The user will be able to browse fonts that are found in subfolders as a single collective list
  • To view sample text and individual characters with the colors chosen by the user
  • To alter sample text or easily exchange between your own standard text samples
  • Display of the fonts information
  • Printing of the font samples
  • Possibility to add notes to the fonts
  • Installing and removing a number of fonts at the same time
  • The possibility to load and unload various fonts and use them temporarily
  • Duplicate and erase a number of fonts at once
  • Renaming of font files to avoid conflicting file names
  • Filtering fonts so that they accord their type
  • Regroup the fonts into collections to ease the management

How to use it


Once you have downloaded the program, all you have to do is to:

Step 1: Search in the left column of the program and click the Browseť tab.

Step 2: You can now choose the folder containing your fonts that are usually in a .TFF format

Step 3: Once done, right-click on the font name and choose the “Load” option

Step 4: The font will now be available within your fonts database.

Step 5: If the font does not appear in the folder yet, restart the program again. this should solve the issue.
