Solaris and Open-Solaris

Solaris was initially based on 4.1BSD (developed by Sun), but now is based on UNIX system V fourth version (Solaris 2- Sun OS5). Consider that Solaris an Open-Solaris don’t belong anymore to the BSD family.

Solaris –SunOS was initially developed by Sun for use on SPARC machines, based on the Unix BSD system. The system has now been modify for use on Intel (x86) and PPC platforms. The core of the system has been named SunOS as for the overall operating system, is known as Solaris. This version of the system isn’t free of charge, compare to the other versions. The actual version uses the same partitioning habits and executes binaries the same way Linux does. The download of the latest version is free, but Sun will charge you for any support.

Open-Solaris is born from part of the source code of Solaris. The LiveCD version already exists and it is CDDL licensed. It is a freeware, but again Sun will charge you for any support.
