Increasing the Virtual Memory

Issue

You can increase the virtual memory on your Windows system if you don’t have enough RAM memory available... Normally, when there’s a dump of physical memory the computer gives you the “Blue Screen of Death” and then restarts by its own, to prevent damage to your system. The process of increasing virtual memory is just that the system will move data to be processed to an empty space on the hard disk... so if you have more hard disk space it will be better!

Solution

To increase the virtual memory just follow these steps:
  • Right Click on “My Computer”
  • Select “Properties”
  • Click on the “Advanced” tab
  • In Performance click on “Settings”
  • A new window will appear click on “Advanced” tab
  • In Virtual Memory click on “Change” button
  • Now check “Custom size” box,
  • Type the amount of memory for Virtual memory in “Initial size” and “Maximum size”,
  • Click on Set to finish
  • Restart Windows for changes to take effect!

Please note that if you have only 512MB of ram, increase the virtual memory paging file to 1.5*512=768

This tip can also be applied in Windows Vista
