Securing Windows XP account database

Description

You can use this tip if you want to secure your files and personal data from others if you are working in a corporate environment. This will allow you to save all your information associated with your accounts in a encrypted form on a floppy drive. So each time you try to logon your account you will need to insert this floppy drive, which means that anybody will be able to access the computer if the startup disk isn't inserted.

Solution

You will need a floppy drive inserted in drive A:,

Follow these steps:
  • Click on Start > Run
  • Type syskey, then a windows will appear,
  • Click on "Upgrade"
  • A Window will again appear giving you some options,
  • Select "System Generated Password"
  • Choose "Select startup key on Floppy disk", click "OK" and wait till it completes,

Now you just have to restart your computer, make sure your floppy drive is inserted to log on!

Please note that if you know your username and password, you won't be able to access your account until you use the startup disk.
