You try to install Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Vista and you get an error (0x80070057), here's the solution:
Uninstall the 3 latest security updates following:
  • KB970653
  • KB972036
  • KB973874


Then install Service Pack 2. It is available for download here (32-bit version):
