Choosing your RAM
Factors to be taken into account
The frequency
There are currently 19 default frequencies, for RAM, besides the ones you can achieve with overclocking. These frequencies range from 133MHz to 2000MHz, but the aeffective frequency ranges from 133/2=66.5Mhz to 2000/2=1000Mhz (1 Gb).
When choosing your RAM, you have to take into account this frequency based on what the motherboard can handle. If your motherboard supports DDR2 in PC-5300/6400/8500 , make use of these type and nothing else.
DDR? DDR2? DDR3?
Again all will depend on tour motherboard. Most motherboards do not support that type of ram but there are models such as the P5KC that support DDR2 and DDR3 but not both connected at the same time.
The oldest of all is the DDR, now excluded from the market. DDR2 has finally managed to carve a niche in the market and is very well established. The prices are low.
Concerning DDR3, Intel is trying to create a need but for now the demand is low.
CAS
CAS latency (Column Address Strobe) is the access time to a column. If CAS is hogher (eg 4-4-4-12) and the more memory will be fast.
The dual channel
The dual channel technology is managed by the Northbridge to double the bandwidth.
How much ram?
There are two main types of OS (Operating System):
32bits OS can accept up 3.25Go RAM and 64bits OS beyond 4GB .
