[Windows] XP Pro or XP Home?
Myth
Version XP Pro better than the Home (more reliable, more stable, faster ...)?
Reality
That is absolutely false!
Explanations
XP Home and XP Pro have exactly the same kernel and the same system files.
XP Home is just as stable and fast as the Pro version.
The Pro version simply has features that are useful for business purposes.
Some features of the XP Pro version, absent in the Home version:
- Remote Desktop: XP Home only has Remote Assistance, which works only on invitation. Remote Desktop of XP Pro can connect to a machine without invitation.
- IIS: XP Home does not come with the Microsoft IIS server. This lack is easily filled with hundreds of web servers and Free FTP server(Apache, EasyPHP, Xitami)
- SNMP: Only XP Pro has SNMP (which allows a central server to collect statistics on network performance).
- Multi-processor: XP Home only supports one processor, but supports Hyperthreading and multi-cores (dual-core, etc.)..
- Encrypting File System (EFS): This feature is missing in XP Home, but is easily remedied by programs like *TrueCrypt.
- Efficient management of access rights to files: absent from XP Home. Useful in business when there are plenty of different network users.
- Centralized administration (management by domain, group management rights, remote installation, etc..): Useful in business for centralized management of all positions.
- Roaming profile: you can find his profile in Windows login on other machines in the field.
Conclusion
The Pro version is more expensive, more complex features that will find their use only in a Business environment.
