Managing Windows Components
Windows XP supports features allowing you to disable several components such as games, MSN Messenger, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, and many more using the option: "Add and Remove Windows Components".
Accessing the Windows Components Manager
Start> Control Panel> Add / Remove Programs> Add / Remove Windows Components.
Managing Windows Components
To have more info about each section, simply click on details once it is selected.
- Accessories and Utilities: Windows games and accessories
- Accessories: Calculator, document templates, Paint, desktop wallpaper, mouse pointers, clipboard, table of characters.
- Game: Minesweeper, Freecell, Games on the Internet, Solitaire, Spider Solitaire.
- Other file services and network printing: Sharing files and printers of this computer with other computer on network.
Print Service for Unix: Allow Unix clients to print from any printer available for this computer.
Internet Explorer: Microsoft Windows preinstalled.
Windows Media Player: Software to view video /audio /photo designed for Windows, pre-installed.
Set Root Certificates update: download latest root certificates automatically to provide better, messaging, Web browsing ..etc.
MSN Explorer: Surf the Web, read your emails, chat with your contacts online, enjoy music and video online, etc..
Management tools and analysis: tools for analyzing and improving network performance.
WMI SNMP Provider: Allows client applications to access SNMP information static and dynamic via the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
SNMP (Protocol simplified network management): Includes agents that analyze the activity of network devices and send their report to the console system of the network.
Outlook Express: Mail service Powered by Microsoft.
Indexing Service: locates indexes and maintains your documents for quick retrieval of the text.
Fax services: Allow sending and receiving faxes.
Windows Messenger: light version of MSN Messenger.
Note that
You can activate/deactivate these components at any time, but beware, for some components; you'll need to insert your installation CD of Windows XP.
