In Windows 7, that the gadgets sidebar usually present in Windows Vista his not present.
However, the gadgets, are still present and is very simple to add new ones on your desktop.

Start by making a right click on the desktop, then choose Gadgets, then just double click on a gadget or dragging on the desktop for the add.
