Explanation


WEP allows in principle to avoid:
  • That the unauthorized use of your WiFi access point
  • Encrypt your communications WiFi.



In practice, there are tools that can find the WEP encryption key in a few seconds, sometimes minutes, even with 128 bits keys.

The latest attacks can find the key with just 85,000 captured packets (which is ridiculously low).

Currently, the only answer is to use equipment that supports the WiFi standard WPA2 or use a VPN (such as OpenVPN: http://openvpn.net/)
