  • 700 Mo (or slightly more): CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW
  • 4,7 Gb : DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW
  • 8,5 Gb: DVD-ROM, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL
  • 15 Gb: HD-DVD simple layer, HD-DVD-R
  • 25 Gb: BD-R, BD-RE, Blu-Ray simple layer
  • 30 Gb : HD-DVD double layer
  • 50 Gb: Blu-Ray double layer(DL)
  • 51 Gb: HD-DVD triple layer

Re-writable media

  • Media that cannot be modified: CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray
  • Media that can be burned but not be erased afterward: CD-R, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, HD-DVD-R, BD-R
  • Media that can be burned and erased afterwards: CD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, BD-RE

Constraints

  • A CD burner can not write DVD.
  • A DVD + R will not burn DVD+R DL (It should also be specifically stamped DL).
