Create a repeatable texture (Tileable)
Making a tileable is useful for example at the bottom of a web page or to dress 3D objects in computer graphics.
Often, there are beautiful images, but they are rarely used as such because the joints (space)between are visible if they are placed side by side.
Rework these images manually is tedious and delicate.
Fortunately, there is a plugin for Gimp for this job, called: Texturize.
Installation
- Linux (Debian / Ubuntu), type: sudo aptitude install gimp-texturize. If you do not have Debian or a derivative, find the plugin in your package manager.
- On Windows, install the plugin Gimp and Gimp-Texturize
Making use
- Open Gimp and load the image you want to texture.
- Go to Filters> Map> Texturize ...
- Make sure the Tileable box is checked and click "OK".
- Let the calculation be done: This can be quite long.
- The resulting image will be 4 times larger (2 times wider and twice as high). This is normal.
- You can play on the "Recovery (pixels)" to limit or increase the area of overlap between images (which may yield better results by the image).
