Oen Registry Editor start>run>regedit) click edit, click find, enter: c:\windows\config\csrss.exe then if it finds an entry delete it.

Thank you so much for the advice!

That changed everything!

The error message disappeared. After following your advice and upon restart, there was no error message.

Thanks again,

Thanks, Michael!

Your tip solved my CSRSS.EXE problem too!

I also had the EXPLORER.EXE problem in the registry. I'm so glad I happened upon this forum. It's easy to find sites talking about what is/is not a virus, but rare when someone actually posts a solution.

Thanks a bunch, guys!

Michael,
Your solution worked perfectly and thanks. It seems it was a leftover from a virus Zone Alarms found.

I recently had the same problem. It seems to be that this may be the remnants of a virus that was removed. If you look in your registry for the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

There is a value named "Shell" -- This should be set to "Explorer.exe" but on my system, it was set to "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe"

I changed it to be just "Explorer.exe" and that seems to have solved it.

Didn't find the answer you are looking for?

Ask a question
Ya. Thts good buddies. Me too got "..C:\Windows\config\csrss.exe.", on startup. I edited that rude CSRSS.exe frm this SHELL-registry value..

Now my system works fine.. No more nagging screens..

double click in the right hand pane on the "Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe" entry. Edit out everything but explorer.exe

Thank you for everything :) when I typed c:\windows\config\csrss.exe file to search, It was under shell property or something like that.. instead of changing to explore.exe I just deleted whole shell section. So far I dont' get any more pop up.

This is how I did it
1. Ran virus program ( I use AVG)
2. Ran Ad-aware

you should have something there.. so I moved to vault or deleted them( whatever infected file)

3. restart my comp and Go my directory windows\config to see if there is csrss.exe file there.
I didn't have it.. if you do you should delete it right away.
4. Go Regedit and search for c:\windows\config\csrss.exe and it was under shell section or property (.. not sure what to call it..).
5. I just deleted Shell using delete key (looks like people are saying just change path to explore.exe or something like that.)

Do you know what the shell thing does anyways exactly?? I am using my computer without any problem... Any computer experts please let me know :)

to presidentmuffin9,
registry editor as its name implies is used to view and change settings in the system registry, which contains information about how your computer runs.
what you have to do: click start, then choose run. enter "regedit" without the quotations. the registry editor window will then appear. click on the "edit". choose find and type "c:\windows\config\csrss.exe" if you find something, delete it.

You, my friend, have been infected by Antivirus 2008 xp, or some such variant. It disables Regedit, Taskmanager and MSConfig so you can't remove it.

You'll need to first get the virus/trojan removed before you can do any finishing touches.

I always like to start with the free online scan from www.pandasecurity.com. Just choose the free online scan from the left. You'll need to register an email address. I just use the same one I use for bogus stuff. In other words, go create an email at gmail or hotmail that you can use if you know you're going to get junk mail from them.

The free online tool is easy to follow. However, it's mostly for detection of bad stuff. It requires the full version to remove them automatically. It at least tells you where the infected files are.

If it doesn't remove it then you might need a anti-spyware program that will. There's several out there. Just google it. Antivirus 2008 xp or 2009, something like that.
