Overclocking - Comparing CPU performances
You can easily compare the performances of the latest CPUs, via numerous online sources, but it is not the case for overclocked ones. It may be interesting to know where your overclocked CPU lies on the performance scale, compared to the latest CPU available on the market or other overclocked ones.
The purpose of this article is to show the performance achieved by overclocking your CPU.
PC Update a specialized magazine, compared the performances of several CPUs using the popular multi-threaded benchmark tool, Cinebench
. The results are based on performances that can be attained via a "reasonable" (reachable by most users) overclocking of each CPUs.
There is some differences among the of results depending on the brand and generations of CPUs.
- For socket 1156, the i5-750 is 43% better when overclocked at 4Ghz (nominal frequency 2.66GHz) and it matches the performance of a normal i5-2500K.
- For socket 1155, the Sandy Bridge i5-2500K when overclocked to 4.8 GHz is 40% better than nominal frequency, and is outclass a normal i7-3770k;
- For socket 1155, the Ivy Bridge i5-3570K gains 30% compared to its nominal frequency;
- For socket 2011, the i7-3930K when overclocked at 4.6 GHz gains 22% compared to its nominal frequency: here the gains are less important, but this CPU is already among the most powerful ones.
Even though Phenom II X4 can be easily overclocked, the gains are quite low, only the Phenom II X6 provide significant results. The FX models are no better,
-Only 10% better ( from its nominal frequency) with a Phenom II X4 965 overclocked at 3.9 GHz;
-The FX 4100, overclocked at 4.6 GHz is 12% better compared to its nominal frequency,
-The FX 8150, overclocked at 4.8 GHz is 20% better compared to its nominal frequency, and it exceeds slightly the non overclocked i7-2600;
-The AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, gets 26% when overclocked at 4.2 GHz.
These results show that the overclocking can extend the life time of some CPUs, giving the same performance levels as new CPUs.
