Dreamweaver2 doesn't start on WinXP

The Problem

When installing on WinXP dreamweaver2, the software does not start. This is the copy dreamweaver2 in french which was distributed free in 2002, but the problem is not limited to this release.

After much searching to understand the reason, I finally came across an article that seemed insignificant, but which was entirely appropriate to address this problem.

During the first boot after installation, Dreamweaver2 tries to connect to the Macromedia server to register the copy. For reasons unclear, if Internet Explorer is not the default browser, the system crashes.

The Solution

Dreamweaver2 install normally:
  • Before the first start:
  • Make sure that IE is indeed the default browser by going to the IE properties, programs tab, check "to verify that Internet Explorer is the default browser."
  • Start IE and answer "YES" to the question "you want that IE is the default browser?" . Close IE.
  • Then restart the computer and start Dreamweaver2, You will see three choices for the connection to servers macromedia to save copying:
  • 1. Register Now
  • 2. Register Later
  • 3. Do not remind me

The choice is yours but be aware that if you choose "later", the software tries to log on every boot and if IE is not the default browser, the same problem will reappear.
Personally I chose "never".

Then you can put your favorite browser by default. Dreamweaver will work normally.
