Generally,
file sharing over the internet via email is a part and parcel of daily computer usage. There is, however, a problem in this process. One cannot send
large files like the ones that are more than 5 MB over email. The solution to this issue is readily available. FTP servers can be installed in the computer to share large files.
Web servers also serve the same purpose as FTP servers in terms of
file sharing. If the users are not inclined to installing servers in their computers, they can use websites that allow accommodation of temporary files. One such website is
Rapidshare.
FTP servers and file sharing!
Sending large files to friends using e-mail is not always easy. Most mail servers do not accept files larger than 5MB. However, there are alternatives:
FTP servers
If you have permanent access to the internet (eg ADSL), you can install an FTP server on your computer and give the address to your friends. There are free servers like FTP Server TypSoftFTP.
The Web Server (HTTP)
You can even install a web server like: pi3web. Xitami, Apache, TinyWeb, etc.
Hosting Website for temporary files
If you do not want to install a server on your computer, there are some websites that can accommodate your temporary files like Rapidshare or Megaupload.
Rapidshare
Rapidshare is the most famous file hosting website; you can load up to 200MB.
Simple Steps:
- Upload a file on the website.
- Obtain a Link (URL) which the website will give to you.
- Share the URL with your friends.
- They will therefore be able to download the file uploaded using the URL.
