May 2013

[Windows 2000]Restore the Add/Remove Programs feature

Issue

Upon uninstalling a program via the Add/Remove Programs utility, all you get is a white screen and the following error message error message like:

An unexpected error occurred
Object does not support this property or method

 res://appwiz.cpl/default.hta
 line 82

Solution

The Add/Remove programs feature can be installed directly from the Windows insallation disk. Look in appwiz.cpl in the I386 folder

Note that: In the case that you have I386 copied (during installation) to the root of C: C:\I386.
  • You do Start> Run> cmd -> Ok
  • The syntax of the command line: expand source destination
  • Which gives:
  • expand [Drive]\I386\APPWIZ.CP_ %systemroot%\system32\appwiz.cpl

Close the window using the exit command:

Launch Add/Remove Programs and ... you have a new error message:

An unexpected error occurred
Object does not support this property or method

 res: / / appwiz.cpl / default.hta
 line 75
  • Start> Run and enter one of the following commands:
  • For Internet Explorer 6.0
    • rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt
  • For Internet Explorer 5.0 or 5.5
    • rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt

After rebooting your PC, the Add/Remove Programs should work properly
