  MediaInfo supplies the list of the necessary codecs as well as the technical information on your video and audio files.
It is a free (free access to the source code, LPG license or LGPL).

MediaInfo allows to obtain the following information:
- General: title, author, director, album, number of track, date, duration...
- Video: codec, forms, images/s, flow...
- Audio: codec, Frequency, number of channels, language,flow...
- Text: codec, language of subtitles
- Chapters : number of chapters, list of chapters

It supports the following formats:
DivX, XviD, H263, H.263, H264, x264, ASP, AVC, iTunes, MPEG-1, MPEG1, MPEG-2, MPEG2, MPEG-4, MPEG4, MP4, M4A, M4V, QuickTime, RealVideo, RealAudio, RA, RM, MSMPEG4v1, MSMPEG4v2, MSMPEG4v3, VOB, DVD, WMA, VMW, ASF, 3GP, 3GPP, 3GP2

MediaInfo also reads following formats :
- Video: MKV, OGM, AVI, DivX, WMV, QuickTime, Real, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DVD ( VOB)...
( Codecs: DivX, XviD, MSMPEG4, ASP, H.264, AVC...)
- Audio: OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, IN, AIFF...
- Subtitles: SRT, SSA, ASS, SAMI...

MediaInfo possesses the following features:
- Reads several video and audio file formats
- Several ways of showing information (text, board, in tree, HTML...)
- Possibility of customizing displays
- Possibility of exporting in several formats: text, CSV, HTML...
- Graphic interface, line of command, or DLL
- Integration with the shell MS-Windows (drag'n’drop, and pop-up menu)
- Possibility of showing any language on any version of the operating system (Internationalization)
- Possibility of having the interface in any language (Localization) (but I need translators)

Note that there is a mode command line allowing to use it in scripts and a library is also available to integrate its features into a software.

Finally, MediaInfo allows to display a download link towards the missing codec !
