Introduction to fibre optics

Optical fibre is a physical transmission medium that allows high-speed data transmission using optical rays. Optical fibre is made up of three components:

  • the core, the part that propagates light rays;
  • the optical fibre cladding, surrounding the core, made of a material whose refraction index is less than that of the core, so as to confine propagation of the light rays;
  • the protective outer layer, protecting the optical fibre cladding from physical deterioration.
