Sharing an Internet connection on Windows XP

Advantages

If you have a LAN (two or more computers connected in a network, i.e., each has a network card), of which one is connected to the Internet (via a modem, cable, etc.), it may be worthwhile to make the Internet accessible to the other computers on the LAN by installing software that will act as a proxy server, i.e., software that gives access to LAN computers "by proxy" by redirecting information.

However, the larger the number of users, the weaker the bandwidth for each one will be, because the users share the loss in bandwidth... Thus, if 8 users are connected on DSL at 512 Kb/s, there will only be 64 kb/s per person, or 6 or 7 KB/s per person...
There are various programs that allow you to carry out this function; however, Windows 98 and Windows XP have this functionality built in.

In the following, we will assume that the connection is already configured on the PC with Internet access.
This computer (PC no. 1) will act as a server (proxy), while the other LAN computers will be clients (PC no. 2, 3, and 4, etc.).
Thus, we will choose the address 192.168.0.1 for PC no. 1, which has the Internet connection (the others will take thea ddresses IP 192.168.0.2, 192.168.0.3, 192.168.0.4, respectively).

Server on Windows XP/2000

To authorize Internet connection sharing on the host(the one that has an Internet connection), just right-click "My network places" on the desktop, then select Properties in the menu. Right-click the icon of your connection, then choose Properties. Then, click on the tab Advanced and check the box Authorize other network users to connect via the Internet connection of this computer as well as the two other boxes. Validate your selections by clicking on OK and close the Network connection window.

If this option is not available in the Advanced tab, just use the Configuration wizard at the bottom of the tab and specify that This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my network connect to the Internet via this computer." !

Clients on Windows XP/2000

Next, configure the bridges on the clients. The bridge is the IP address of PC no. 1, which has the Internet connection, i.e., 192.168.0.1 in this case.

In the window "Internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties", in the "General" tab, enter 192.168.0.1 as the bridge for each of the clients. Still in the "General" tab, click on "Use the following DNS server address" and enter the following information:

Preferred DNS server: 192.168.0.1 Auxiliary DNS server: nothing
They correspond to the primary and secondary DNS (Domain Name Server).

Server on Windows 98

To share the connection of a computer on Windows 98, first, install the service "Internet connection sharing". To do this, go to Run/Parameters/Control panel/Add or delete programs/Windows installation/Internet tools then select "Internet connection sharing". Confirm by clicking on "OK", then indicate the Windows 98 folder when requested by the system.

Clients on Windows 98

It is necessary to configure clients (the other computers on the network) so that they know that the connection is made via PC1. In the "Bridge" tab of the window "TCP/IP properties", enter 192.168.0.1 as the new bridge, and don't forget to click on add. In the "DNS configuration" tab, click on "Activate DNS" and enter the following information:

Host: Name-of-PC1 // for all PCs (except for PC1 itself) Domain:
In "DNS search order", type "192.168.0.1" and click on "add".
