Project engineer

The profession of a project engineer, also called a sales engineer, involves contacting businesses in order to introduce them to his/her company's products, and identifying products which may fulfill their needs.

The project engineer must choose companies to solicit, contact and meet with these companies, and finally agree on a project that suits their needs. He is also in charge of working with the client to develop a technical/commercial proposal (project specifications) and negotiating contracts that take into account the financial and legal risks, which are then approved by a legal official.

For the entire duration of the project, he/she acts as the client's liaison within the company, and handles communications between his/her company's technical service team and the client.

Skills

The project engineer must be intimately familiar with his/her company's products and services, while also possessing business acumen, especially the ability to persuade and negotiate, as well as trust-building interpersonal skills.

Education

Salary

A project engineer's annual salary starts at around $38k (£19k) and can reach higher than $70k (£35k), depending on the size of his/her project portfolio.
