Systems engineer

The job of a systems engineer (sometimes called a system manager) is to install and operate a company's hardware and software installations.

Working with the technical teams, the systems engineer must establish and perpetually update an inventory for the company's computers, and formulate a plan of operations. In addition, he/she must ensure that workstations are usable, and implement tools that make work easier for the company staff. He/she must also monitor the hardware and software.

Skills

The profession of a systems engineer requires not only technical knowledge of the business's systems, hardware and software, but also the interpersonal and organisational skills of a project manager, in order to coordinate technical teams. He/she may also become involved in recruiting teams of technicians.

Salary

A systems engineer's salary may vary from $50k-$70k (£25k-£35) per year, depending on the size and complexity of the system.
